8World War Z
Some were surprised by the announcement of aWorld War Zgame. It was even more surprising when the game turned out to be a huge success. Developer Saber Interactive successfully creates the feeling of beingoverwhelmed by zombies.
Console players only receive a fraction of what is possible on a more technically capable PC, but hopefully, the PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade create a smoother experience. All the same, mowing down thousands of zombies with friends is satisfying regardless of the platform.
7Doom
TheDoomreboots, which started with 2016’sDoom, do a great job of recreating the hectic action for which the series is known. Anyone who wants great co-op action from the series, however, has to stick with the originals.

The good news is the originalDoomand its sequel hold up excellently. The gameplay is so simple compared to modern first-person shooters, but it still manages to get the heart racingwhen demons fill up the screen.
6Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Like a lot of franchises,Ghost Recon eventually went open-world withWildlands.The open-world stealth-action gameplay somewhat resemblesMetal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, but here players can jump into the world with friends.
The sequel, Breakpoint, received significantly worse reviews. Where many games on this list focus on intense action, Ghost Recon: Wildlands lets players approach most situations either stealthily or with guns blazing.
5Mass Effect
This one might seem like an outlier, butMass Effect’score combat plays similarlyAliens: Fireteam Elite,only with deeper systems. Commander Shepard fights enemies in traditional third-person shooter combat and firefights can become hectic with dozens of enemies coming at the protagonist.
The combat and abilities go significantly deeper than theAliensgame. Then,there is the deep story spanning three gameswhere the player’s decision deeply impacts the course of the narrative.
4Gears Of War
While not the first game to utilize the classic over-the-shoulder camera and cover-based shooting mechanics,Gears of Warpopularized the formula and refined it.

It was one of the first big Microsoft exclusives for the Xbox 360 and helped the console maintain superiority during the early years of that generation. The series is still going strong and they all containcooperative play through the campaign, so there is never a better time to jump into with a friend than today.
3Killing Floor 2
Killing Floor 2treads some well-worn ground by being a first-person shooter tasking players with mowing down and running away from hordes of zombies. All the same, it still managed to carve out its own fanbase.
Even though it came out in 2016, the developer still regularly updates it, and Saber Interactive even recently went on board to help with development. InKilling Floor 2, six players maximum can take on a level, more than the average cooperative FPS.
2Borderlands 3
Borderlandshas a special appeal thanks to its art style and general carefree attitude. Some might be turned off by the cheesy humor and over-the-top violence, but others find it charming.
Regardless of the writing and aesthetic, the gameplay in the entire series is always a blast, especially when four people go through a campaign together. The unique loot system makes for an almostcountless amount of weapons.Thanks to re-releases, the entire series is playable on modern consoles.
AlthoughLeft 4 Dead 2came out more than a decade ago, the game still has an active community. People were clamoring for a sequel for years until developer Turtle Rock Studiosannounced a spiritual successorBack 4 Blood.
The upcoming game has a release date of July 19, 2025, so until that day comes fans can bide their time by going through theLeft 4 Dead 2levels one last time. No one is surprised Valve has yet another beloved series with no third entry.
