Whether it’s the comics or the movie, fans of theScott Pilgrimseries have a handful of quotes that they love to bring up. From “Bread makes you fat” to “I’m in lesbians with you” there is a quote for everyone out there that will resonate with them. It’s a comedy as much as it is an action comic/film.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Offis a new take for the series that is almost two decades old. It has plenty of new quotes, funny moments, and awesome fight scenes that will keep fans satiated for years. Maybe less if Netflix makes another season, which could happen. For now, let’s focus on quotes and there will be spoilers.
8“If We Suck The Audience Won’t Like Us…They’ll Think We Suck.”
Stephen Stills, Episode 1
Stephen Stills is one of Scott’s bandmates in Sex Bob-omb. His character is always stressing about the band in the comics and the anime although it is a little less intense in the anime. This quote right before the band goes on stage in episode one perfectly sums up his character. The interesting twist toScott Pilgrim Takes Offis that Stephen gets more confidence in the band after Knives joins. They evenwrite a musicaltogether for the climactic finale.
7“Let’s Party.”
Lucas Lee, Episode 2
Lucas Lee isan action moviestar, a skateboarder, and also Ramona’s second Evil Ex. He’s a bit full of himself like when he tells the rest of the Evil Exes how he improvises lines. Roxy brings up how he said “Let’s Party” in one of his worst movies to which Lucas says he never did. Seconds later, the waiter offers him a drink and Lucas says this line un-ironically which points to his contradictory nature. Lucas is a bit of a himbo, but one that exudes confidence and muscles.
6“No, I Wanna Put You Into Your Misery.”
Matthew Patel, Episode 2
Matthew Patel is Ramona’s first Evil Ex. He was supposed to die in the fight against Scott but he somehow managed to win, unlike the comics. This gives Matthew overconfidence which he uses to challenge to the leader of the League of Evil Exes, Gideon, to a duel.
After he defeats Gideon and takes his company, Gideon begs for death. That’s when Matthew retorts with this line. It’s a much worse fate for a villain to wallow in his defeat than to be set free via death although the themes ofScott Pilgrim Takes Offare redemption and forgiveness. So, this sparing is more of a favor to Gideon in the end who is one nasty comic villain/toxic boyfriend.
5“Here I Am, Rox You Like A Hurricane.”
Roxy Richter, Episode 3
This quote from Roxy Richter in episode three is a fun reference to the song “Rock You Like A Hurricane” by Scorpions. In the comic, Scott has an epic fight against Roxy but this time she dukes it out with Ramona more. She’s feeling bitter about how things were left, which leads to Ramona’s apology and eventually Roxy calming down. The fight is great as it goes through multiple films before the finale including a samurai filmand a western.
4“Nobody Needs This Information, Todd.”
Envy Adams, Episode 5
One of the biggest twists in this adaptation is that Todd falls in love with Wallace. Wallace, also, becomes an actor on the set of a Scott Pilgrim movie playing himself. Episode five overall is very meta in that itis a documentaryof this failed movie pitch. In his saddened state of eventually being turned down by Wallace, Todd discovers the virtues of poutine eaten from a bucket. He proceeds to show Envy and Ramona all of the places he and Wallace made out in his trailer including a toilet. This prompts the line from Envy about too much information.
3“Friendship!”
Gordon Goose, Episode 8
When Gideon is defeated by Matthew, he goes to Toronto to hang out with his only friend Julie. In their new life together, Gideon goes back to his birth name, Gordon Goose, and becomes a slob. When Lucas gets fired as an actor he tracks Gordon down, hoping he’d know a way out of hitting rock bottom.
Their meeting looks ominous at first as if Gordon has a plan to retake it all. Instead, Gordon screams the solution to their problems is friendship. This is followed by a montage of them bonding together over cooking, skating, and playing video games on what looks likea SNES console.
2“Kiss Her, Kiss Her, Kiss Her!”
The Evil Exes, Episode 8
The comic’s plot is simple enough as is the movie and video game adaptations. To date Ramona, Scott has to defeat her seven Evil Exes which means killing them. It’s not as brutal as it sounds as all characters explode into coins when they die likein a lot of brawlers. However, the message is still clear as day: kill to get what you want.Scott Pilgrim Takes Offhas a different approach through the aforementioned themes of redemption and forgiveness. By the end, all seven Envy Exes are chanting for Scott to kiss Ramona. It’s a cute scene that shows how everyone has grown as characters.
1“The Goose Is Loose, Honk Honk F**kers!”
Julie, Episode 8
The original comic has a classic ending of two lovers, i.e. Scott and Ramona, going off into a void to be together. Things could continue, but it leaves on a good note with not a lot of questions left on the table.Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’sending is the opposite as the final scene shows Gideon back to his full self with Julie at his HQ. They’re watching the others through monitors. Are they plotting something? Will the goose be indeed let loose as Julie exclaims at the end or is this a one-and-doneanime series for Netflix?
