James Gunn and Peter Safran recently announced their plans for the new DCU, which will be a soft reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe that will allow new plans, characters, and actors to flourish. One of the major surprises from the announcement is a newSupergirlfilm.
While Superman will also be a focus of an upcoming reboot, the more surprising film announcement is that ofSupergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. Despite the recent appearance of a new live-action Supergirl character in the latest trailer forThe Flash, there is very little informationso far about how the Supergirl movie will pan out for DC, or who could play the character. However, there are a few candidates who would be great in the role.

6Sasha Calle
The most obvious option for the new DC Supergirl would be Sasha Calle. While much aboutThe Flashmovie seems confusing and other-worldly, such as the sudden appearance of Michael Keaton’s Batman, the appearance of a Supergirl character played by Sasha Calle could be more of aherald for things to come.

Calle’s role is mysterious, and withThe Flashmovie being a big part of reorganizing the DC Universe, there are all kinds of things that could happen to the characters appearing in that movie in particular. Whether Calle takes on a huge new part with her Supergirl character inwhat comes next remains to be seen. However, it is important to note that with a variety of Elseworlds projects already announced for the DCU, there is a chance that Calle continues in her role whileSupergirl: Woman Of Tomorrowfocuses on another incarnation of the character.
5Kiernan Shipka
One of the best young commoditiesin the business today,Kiernan Shipka was Netflix’sThe Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, and was a fantastic, charismatic protagonist in that series for years. While the role of Supergirl is a little different in style, Shipka has the Hollywood experience at a relatively young age and a do-gooder attitude which could be perfect for such an important new role.
Not a lot of major motion pictures were announced in the first slate of DCU projects, with a lot of the headlines being made by live-action and animated series. The fact that Supergirl is getting a film of her own must mean that Gunn and Safran want to push Supergirl as a character. Shipka is known to audiences both in film and TV terms, and it will be a safer bet than a lesser-known quantity to cast her where box office commodity isn’t assured.

4Melissa Benoist
Another option, albeit an unlikely one, is to cast somebody who knows the role better than literally anybody in existence. Melissa Benoist has played Supergirl in the CW show for years, longer than anyone in history. She is definitely an easy choice for a major motion pictureversion of the characterin a post-Flash world where different universes could be brought together.

Benoist is unlikely to reprise the role for more than a cameo, but her inclusion would bring a huge volume of fan support from those who already loved The CWSupergirlshow and would love to see Benoist bring her established version of the character back. Whether this happens or not, Benoist will remain the best incarnation of the character known to mainstream audiences, potentially for a long time.
3Madison Iseman
Another amazing actor with a lot of experience for someone so young, Iseman has the perfect look and style to play a young Kara Zor-El for the DCU. Whether they are looking for a known commodity to big screen audiences, or someone who has worked on more intimate TV dramas, Iseman is a widespread star who could build a lot of star power on the back of an opportunity in a major superhero role for Marvel or DC.
While it seems difficult for DC to cast someone with so little experience in leading blockbuster roles, their need for somebody that fits the bill of Superman’s younger cousin means that their options in that department are limited. Having appeared in films likeAnnabelle Comes Home,Fear of Rain, and the newJumanjimovies, Iseman is a fantastic opportunity to build an A-list star.

2Samara Weaving
If, however, DC is going for a more established set of heroes in their new DC Universe, then there is an option to cast someone slightly older for Kara. Samara Weaving gives them the best of both worlds: she has the look of Supergirl while also havingexperience in blockbuster roles. Without ever having been in a major superhero role, Weaving has already amassed quite a filmography.
The Babysitter,Ready Or Not,Snake Eyes,Bill And Ted Face The Music,Babylon, andScream VIare just a few of the many projects Weaving has starred in, despite only having just turned 30. While there are a number of great younger options, the box office difficulty that DC will face with this film makes it hard to turn down an established name and face like Weaving.

1Anya Taylor-Joy
However, there is one option that combines everything DC must be looking for in their Supergirl. The perfect look, box office greatness, and a lack of previous superhero roles making for a fresh face to the genre are all present in Anya Taylor-Joy. At the youthful age of 26,Anya has already starredas the lead in projects likeThe Queen’s Gambit,The Witch,Last Night In Soho,Emma, andThe Menu.
An absolute bona fide star, Anya Taylor-Joy can bring the star power DC needs forSupergirl: Woman Of Tomorrowwhile being young enough to grow with the role over the course of many years. DC needs stars, and Anya Taylor-Joy is a readymade one that is absolutely perfect for their requirements.
