Apex Legendsis an FPS battle royale game that lets players choose from a selection of “Legends,” with each Legend being placed into a category based on their specific abilities, skills, and determined playstyle. One of those categories is “Controller,” which is for players who look to control the battlefield and use their abilities to force opponents into difficult situations, as opposed to attacking head-on or attacking from afar.
Controller Legends are very popular mainly due to their ability to massively tip the scales in favor of their users, especially when players have their ultimate and tactical abilities primed and ready to use. Controller Legends inApex Legendsusually require a high amount of game IQ,although with the Season 20 update, it appears every Controller Legend has been buffed, making them all very good options.
4Catalyst
Dark Matter Manipulation
Catalyst is a Controller Legendthat feels more like a hybrid, with a Skirmisher vibeto her wall ultimate ability, and a support vibe for her door barricade ability. She is also the fastest out of the generally slow Controller Legends, which isn’t saying much as she is still slow, but it is something to note. Catalyst’s abilities are so versatile, which is what makes her a great option.
She can deploy spike strips on the floor that can trap and slow down opponents, alongside her barricading ability, which allows for two doors to be enforced by her dark matter. Players can create a stronghold with these two abilities, making her seem like a more defensive option out of the four Controller Legends. Her ultimate ability, Dark Veil, creates a large curtain of dark matter that cannot be penetrated by enemy gunfire, which is very handy when players are in a gunfight and need some cover.
3Rampart
Amped Cover Complemented By Sheila Minigun
After Season 19 ofApex Legends, it felt clear that Rampartwas a Legend in need of a buff for Season 20. Rampart’s Sheila ultimate, which gives her an extremely powerful minigun, has been buffed massively and is on the verge of being overpowered, especially when shot through the damage-boosting glass of her disposable Amped Cover walls, of which she can place five.
Although this tactical ability and ultimate pairing are very strong, Rampart is quite one-dimensional inApex Legends,as her passive Modded Loader ability only makes reloads faster for LMGs and her Sheila ultimate minigun, which is handy but very specific to LMG warfare. This means that if players don’t like LMGs and a more defensive setup for fights, they will likely struggle to get the most out of Rampart. On the other hand, players who like this style of playwill find her extremely effective inApex LegendsSeason 20, especially in ranked games.
2Caustic
Gas Traps Galore
Arguablythe most annoying Legend to come up againstinApex Legendsis Caustic, the gas trap expert who can leave players stuck inside the cloud of green gas from his gas canisters. His Nox Gas Trap ability lays an inflatable pad down on the floor, which can be very useful when used behind doors, around corners, or for trapping enemies in rooms. This gas, once activated, chips away at enemies' HP, ignoring shields, which can knock opponents easily. Factor in his Nox Gas Grenade, which is a gas grenade that covers a large area, and Caustic can deal damage from close range and afar.
He is one of the slowest Legends in the game, so players should keep that in mind when looking to use Caustic. Additionally, since his character build is large, his hitbox is also large, meaning he can be quite the target for opposing players. However, Caustic is a strong character, particularly for those who know how and where to place Nox Gas Trap pads.
1Wattson
Electric Fences And Shield Regen Ability
Wattson is a Controller Legend inApex Legendswhois arguably one of the best Legends in the game, period. After players discovered that her Perimeter Security ability, which allows her to place a system of electrified fences by connecting nodes that damage players, can be used more than just in a defensive stronghold and can be great for trapping foes in spider webs of electricity on the fly, Wattson shot up the rankings to be one of the best Legends.
Add in her ultimate ability, Interception Pylon, which regenerates shields for any players nearby while also intercepting any ordnance. Wattson is a Legend that is great for close combat while stopping long-range grenade attacks too. She is not exactly beginner-friendly, as players can only get the best out of her abilities once they are experienced enough to know how to use her electric fences effectively. However, once mastered, Wattson is an extremely strong option inApex LegendsSeason 20.
