Summary

Activision and Sledgehammer Games revealed that major Gunsmith changes that will be made inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The Gunsmith tool is a returning feature from priorCall of Dutyentries, but notable changes will add a new layer of customization inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3that alters weapon performance in an entirely new way.

Modern Warfare 3marks the return of Vladimir Makarov, the iconic antagonist of the originalModern Warfaretrilogy. Makarov will be playable as an operator inModern Warfare 3’smultiplayer modes, and a slew ofModern Warfare 2content will returnthanks toCall of Duty’snew Carry-Forward System. This returning content includes weapons, purchased bundles, operators, and other rewards/unlocks acquired inModern Warfare 2.

TheCall of Dutydevelopers released a new video and blog post that highlights major changes being made to Gunsmith inModern Warfare 3. This November,Modern Warfare 3players will have access to Aftermarket Parts, which are an entirely new option within the Gunsmith tool. After reaching the max weapon level and completing a subsequent challenge, Aftermarket Parts may be used to convert the weapon into a different weapon type. For example, a full-auto carbine conversion kit will be available as an Aftermarket Part, allowing players to turn the Renetti pistol into a lightweight SMG with increased damage, bullet velocity and range, and fire rate. The SMG conversion enables the use of additional attachments on the Renetti pistol, allowing the weapon to perform in line with some ofModern Warfare 2’sbest SMGs.

Sledgehammer Games believes that Aftermarket Parts may be useful for players who have already maxed out a weapon’s level since the conversion will change the weapon’s identity and offer a different experience. The developers also demonstrated the use of Aftermarket Parts on the Pulemyot 762, one of the heaviest light machine guns inModern Warfare 3. The Jak Annihilator Aftermarket Parts model lets players convert the Pulemyot 762 LMG into an even lighter Bullpup variant with increased mobility. The Bullpup Pulemyot 762 LMG caters toward a “run-and-gun” play style that’s often employed withModern Warfare 2’sassault riflesand SMGs.

Modern Warfare 3will make various adjustments to the Gunsmith tool to streamline customization as well. According to Sledgehammer Games, attachments will no longer require players to use and level up a specific weapon after their desired attachment has already been unlocked on a prior weapon. This change will let players immediately use attachments such as grips and stocks on a new weapon without needed to level it up. Moreover, aim down sights speed will no longer be penalized while using new 1x zoom optic attachments inModern Warfare 3.

The newModern Warfare 3Gunsmith changes should encourage players to further personalize their favorite weapons and consider trying out new ones. AlthoughtheModern Warfareseries brought many changes to the Gunsmithover time,Modern Warfare 3may prove to have some of the most important changes yet.
