As much as fans loveDark Souls 3and, to a lesser extent,Dark Souls 2, there’s nothing that quite beats the nostalgia of the originalDark Souls. This is made plain by how strong themodding community forSoulsgamesstill is despite that title being over nine years old now. Unfortunately, it never got a true, direct sequel.
Dark Soulsmodders are now seeking to change that, as some of the most notable modders in the community have all teamed up to createDark Souls: Nightfall, a mod that will act as a direct sequel. WhileDark Souls 2and especiallyDark Souls 3are definitely set in the same world or setting as the first game, they take place either in alternate timelines or far in the past or future.

This mod will take players on a journey thatbegins exactly whereDark Soulsleft off, presumably with the player making the decision to either rekindle the first flame or become the lord of darkness. Exactly where the story will go from there is unclear, as the creators are wanting to keep most of the details under wraps for now.
Aside from a variety of changes to enemy types, maps, and combat, one of the more intriguing additions is the return of the rally system.Bloodbornefans will recognize the rally systemas how the player regains health after being struck. In the simplest terms, hitting an enemy immediately after taking damage allows the player to regain some of the health they lost from the previous attack. This promotes a more headstrong playstyle than the originalDark Soulsdid, and should help to liven up the combat a bit.
Leading the charge on the creation of this mod is Grimrukh, the selfsame modder responsible for the similarly ambitious Daughters of Ash mod. Even though that undertaking was said to take two years and over 1000 development hours to complete, Grimrukh seems confident that this new mod will be even more work than the last. Thankfully, they’ve got a team to help them this time, recruiting the likes of AinTunez (most well known for theQuickSouls combat mod) and MeowMaritus who specializes in the creation of modding tools.
There are others working on the project as well, but that’s no guarantee that it will be done anytime soon.Modding takes a long time, but something like this is a huge undertaking that will require a much more to pull off. When it’s finally complete, fans seem to think it will be worth the wait.
