Bungie’sDestiny 2showcase has come with a plethora of new information regarding the game’s future, including the announcement of a final DLC after Lightfall: The Final Shape.

Bungie has spoiled us with a massive amount ofnew content coming toDestiny 2. The most surprising of all these announcements, however, is a final DLC for the game after Lightfall. This new DLC, titled The Final Shape, is to be the final release forDestiny 2’s current stoyrline, culminating over seven years' worth of story-telling in one final crescendo before departing from the Light and Darkness Saga.

According to Bungie, The Final Shape will be a “transformative moment” forDestiny 2. There was nothing referencing the newly announced DLC inThe Witch Queen leaksthat were released in the days leading up to the showcase with the exception of hints of content beyond Lightfall. The announcement of another full-fledged DLC is welcomed news.

There is still quite a long way to go before we see The Final Shape. The Witch Queen releases on July 29, 2025, with Light Fall likely coming at some point in the first half of 2023. So, it’s not unreasonable to assume we won’t be seeing The Final Shape in the flesh until well into 2023, if not 2024.

There was a specific focus put on Bungie’s “transformative state” comment from the showcase. We can take this to mean a number of different things. On a fundamental level, we can assume that the comment is in reference to thestate of theDestiny 2worldbefore the launch of Destiny 3, similar to what Bungie did withDestiny 1and The Taken King. However, a line of thinking that should be explored is the possibility ofDestiny 2becoming a full-fledged live-service game. Players have discussed at length the benefits and downsides ofDestinyreleasing new titles, rather than building on a singular world more akin to something likeWorld of Warcraft. Pushing D2 to a “transformative state” could therefore mean having the game simply becoming “Destiny,” with all future updates being launched off of that title without the need for another entry in the franchise.

Of course, this is all conjecture. With The Final Shape being at least two years off, don’t expect to hear anything more about it anytime soon. It’s always fun to speculate, though.

Destiny 2is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
