Summary

Four years after its announcement and one year since its first gameplay trailer, Playground Games' upcoming action RPGFablereceived another exclusive look at its story and gameplay during the Xbox Games Showcase. At this point, it’s still unclear whetherFablewill follow in the footsteps of its predecessors when it comes to gameplay and tone, as it seems to be an entirely different take on the series and its most explicit details have yet to be disclosed. Even so, what has been revealed so far has shownFableto have full comprehension of its fantasy roots, as well as its characters and their exaggerated designs.

WhileFable’s protagonist has been at the height of discussion and debate surrounding the game, another character was introduced in the latest trailer which has sparked even more conversation. Humphry, who has taken on the job of narrator inFable’s official trailer, is a mysterious character who may end up playing a fairly prominent role in the game. Based on the context of the trailer and what Humphry reveals about himself and the game’s protagonist, players can likely expect him to make regular appearances and function as a pivotal part of the player’s journey throughFable’s story.

Fable’s Humphry May Play a Larger Role Than It Seems

Humphry Is a Retired Hero Who Has a History With Fable’s Villain

In all respects, Humphry is the star ofFable’s most recent trailer, giving fans the first look at a man who, by his own account, was once the greatest hero in all of Albion. While he doesn’t explicitly mention it, Humphry is retired ahead ofFable’s story, having once gracedthe lands of Albionwith his heroic presence only to apparently now be drinking away the remainder of his days and telling tales of old heroes. However,Fable’s story sees Humphry forced out of retirement, as a new threat has arisen in the form of a heroine he once had close ties with.

Prior to the events ofFable, Humphry took in a very powerful heroine when she had nowhere else to go. During their time together, the heroine grew to be incredibly strong, allowing all of her power to get to her head. Unfortunately, she wound up making the wrong choices and became the villain who now threatens Albion. In the latest trailer for the game,Fable’s protagonistapproaches Humphry and simply says, “Humphry, she’s back.” Shortly thereafter, Humphry and the protagonist are seen coming face-to-face with who is presumably this heroine Humphry once knew.

Humphry Could Play the Role of Mentor in Fable

While very little has been revealed about Humphry’s past and present, it can be assumed that he will play the role of mentor inFable. This role was previously filled by characters like the Guildmaster ofthe Heroes Guildand Theresa in pastFabletitles, and it’s likely Humphry could help players in the same ways that they did — by teaching them new skills, guiding them through combat, and giving them a general overview of life as a hero or heroine in Albion. Based on what has been shown so far, it seems very probable that Humphry will step into this role, as he is even shown guidingFable’s protagonist to “the most exclusive club in all of Albion” and then handing her a sword in the game’s latest trailer.

Since Humphry has such a deep history withFable’s primary antagonist, it’s likely he will receive extensive character development throughout the game’s story. This preemptively makes him one ofFable’s most important characters — perhaps even more so than the protagonist. As someone who is presumably the protagonist’s mentor and an old friend toFable’s villain, Humphry may play one of the game’s most pivotal roles.
