Voiced byMike Henry, Herbert is an elderly man who has a crush on Chris Griffin. But as fans know,Family Guypushes boundaries with its jokes and storylines.

SeveralFamily Guyfans have wondered what happened to Herbert. While there was a"Lois is Dead" hoaxthat turned out to be false, Herbert also stays alive. Herbert’s Family Guy Character Arc, Explained

Herbert’s Family Guy character is called “Herbert The Pervert” and he is a92-year-old manwho is first introduced in the episode “To Live and Die in Dixie.” Herbert is a dark character who likesChris Griffinand meets him through his paper route. While there’s no doubt that he is creepy, this also seems to be the point of the character.

While not much is known about his background, Herbert used to be a member of the United States Army, and that seems to be the biggest part of his backstory. Now that he is retired, he doesn’t seem to spend his time doing much at all. He is often shown wearing a blue robe and he has adog named Jesse. While Jesse isn’t as entertaining as Brian, Jesse is still a key part of the show. WhileFamily Guyhas heartwarming moments, they don’t involve Herbert, who makes inappropriate comments in every scene that he is in.

Herbert doesn’t learn any corny lessons or experience character growth, which could also be said about the otherFamily Guycharacters. This is also true of thecharacters like Stan inAmerican Dad, the show also created by Seth MacFarlane.

In an interview withIGN, Mike Henry shared that he pitched the character in the writer’s room. He explained the origins of Hebert and said said, “Herbert, the old man who likes Chris, was just a character who began because I imitated these old men back in Virginia all the time. I just made them dirty old men…” He added:

“But I pitched one joke in the writer’s room about how he has a crush on Chris, and that’s what catches on!”

Herbert’s Best Family Guy Quotes

Since Herbert is a character uniquely found onFamily Guy, some might say that some of his quotes go too far. He has some funny ones, though, including when he is babysitting for the Griffins and he says:

“So I wanna lay down a few ground rules: no cussing, clean your plates, and only a half-hour of radio and then its off to bed.”

When Herbert explodes and turns into a plant, he says what is perhaps his most memorableFamily Guyquote:

“I… AM… HERBERT!”

This is a reference to theGuardians of the Galaxycharacter Grootwho says “I am Groot.” Jesse takes what is left of Herbert, and Herbert grows into a plant.

Many of the characters on the animated sitcom do the wrong thing, includingBrian who makes many mistakes onFamily Guy,and Herbert’sFamily Guycharacter fits into that category. Since he lives in the same neighborhood as the Griffins, he is always there in the background, and he stands out in every episode that he is in.
