The Witcher’ssecond season is now less than two weeks away from its Netflix premiere and that means the show is fine-tuning the last bits of its promotional efforts. Nevertheless, despite a very successful first run,The Witcherreturns with lots of changes, including a completely revamped musical score.
During its first season,The Witcherwon over the hearts of many fans of the books and games, as well as newcomers to the franchise, thanks in large part to its vast share of great musicalmoments featuring the charming Jaskierand arrangements penned by composers Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli. This time around, the show is bringing a new composer on board with Joseph Trapanese taking over the score, and, suffice to say, the first released track proves some changes are coming.

The first song is titled “Power and Purpose” and it starts off with a tempo that is similar to some of the tunes heard duringThe Witcher’sfirst season. Of course, it has a different tone that showcases Trapanese’s distinct style from his predecessors, most notably in the absence of the Slavic melodies that are so integral to the franchise. However, at around the 3:40 mark, the song transitions into a rhythm that will definitely sound more Witcher-like for anyone who’s played the games.
Trapanese also happens to be the composer for Netflix’sShadow and Bone, something that has not gone unnoticed among some fans who commented on the new music not being as “Witchery” as last season’s score. The new composer’s other works also include the likes ofTron: Legacy(which also features Daft Punk) andThe Greatest Showman.So, while this is only the first track, some changes are to be expected.
For those wanting to hear more of Jaskier’s catchy tunes, fret not because actor Joey Batey has confirmed he recorded no less than three new songs for season two, though matching the success of“Toss a Coin to Your Witcher”will definitely be quite the challenge. In any case, these types of efforts speak volumes of howThe Witcherseems to be leveling up its production values, with the show’s budget rumored to have gone up to the region of $120 million compared to season one’s $80 million.
Those numbers would be aligned with what seems to be an extra effort to include more fancy special effects toThe Witcherto add the monsters and magic Geralt is famous for. Hopefully, fans won’t have to fix the show’s score as they did withThe Witcher’s “Monster” trailerfeaturing one of Kanye West’s hits.
