The first official clip ofMarvel’s upcoming Disney Plus seriesWandaVisionhas been released ahead of its January 15 premiere date. Premiering on Tuesday’sJimmy Kimmel Live, where star Elizabeth Olsen was the guest, the clip takes inspiration from classic 50s sitcoms but with a superhero twist.
TheWandaVisionclip is all in black and white and features Wanda and Vision sleeping in separate beds, as seen in classic sitcoms likeI Love Lucy. Even in bed, Wanda’s hair is full and curled, in a style reminiscent of wives and mothers in 50s and 60s television shows. At one point, a lamp turns on and off next to Vision’s bed, and he asks, “Wanda, are you using your powers to turn on the light?” “Yes dear,” Wanda responds, prompting a canned laugh track.

Along with the frequent laugh track, theWandaVisionclip contains other classic sitcom tropes, including their sleep masks, style of clothing, and affected manner of speaking. The inspiration comes from 50s comedies likethe previously mentionedI Love Lucy,Leave It To Beaver, andThe Dick Van Dyke Show, but with the added twist that both retain their superhero powers, and Vision still does not look like the average human.
Previous trailers forWandavisionreveal that the 50s are not the only decade that the show takes inspiration from. There are scenes that appear to be more late 60s or 70s inspired, resembling TV shows likeBewitchedorThe Brady Bunch. Other scenes look more like classic 80s sitcoms likeFamily TiesorRoseanne. The switching between the eras feels very surreal, and despite the laugh tracks and picture perfect clothing, there’s clearly something very strange about this sitcom universe that Wanda and Vision have found themselves in.Other footage shows Kathryn Hahnas “Agnes,” who is clearly more than just a friendly sitcom neighbor.
Wandavisionseems to be one of the more surreal and less straight-forward shows in the upcoming Marvel line-up. Based on its trailer,Falcon and Winter Soldierfalls in line with the more action-focused MCU films and TV shows.Lokifeels fantastical but also action-oriented, while the still-in-productionHawkeyeseries appears to be drawing a lot of inspirationfrom recent comic storylines featuring the character. While all have drawn excitement from fans,Wandavisionis a standout for the interesting and unexpected visuals.
