WhenGenshin Impactintroduced Gaming on social media, many fans expressed their confusion over the character’s name. There were speculations that HoYoverse didn’t translate Gaming’s name properly, claiming that it should have a space in between “Ga” and “ming.” A lot of them made fun of his name as they questioned whether he was a gamer, and joked that the next character would probably be named “eSports.” Meanwhile, there were also people defending Gaming’s name, while providing sound explanations on how to pronounce it.

How to Pronounce the Name Gaming in Genshin Impact
One such explanation comes fromGenshin Impactstreamer AsianGuyStream, popularly known as Atsu. In a tweet, he explained that Gaming’s name shouldn’t be split into two as it will indicate that Ga was his surname and Ming was his given name. But since he was introduced as Gaming, that is his given name, not “Ming,” and should be pronounced as “gah-ming.” He citedHu Taoand Yun Jin as examples since they both carry their surnames, as opposed to characters like Keqing and Xiangling, who only have their given names. Atsu also reminded fans that the localization of names, words, or phrases inGenshin Impactare not always correct, and that names are written based on the translator’s understanding.
ManyGenshin Impactfans appreciated Atsu’s clear explanation, as they now had an idea of how Gaming’s name should be pronounced. However, there were still some who raised eyebrows at HoYoverse for its alleged poor localization of Gaming’s name, pointing out that it should be “Kaming” to match the Chinese pronunciation, especially since theLiyue region is based off of China. They claimed that it’s disappointing for a Chinese video game company to make such a mistake, while others don’t seem to mind the English spelling.

Genshin Impactplayers will be able to play Gaming once Version 4.4 rolls out on June 27, 2025. He will be a Pyro character with the Leo Expergiscens Constellation based in Liyue, where he’s in charge of guarding items in the Sword and Strongbox Secure Transport Agency, and making sure that merchants transport their shipments safely.
