In a newGhost of TsushimaState of Play gameplay stream, developer Sucker Punch Productions reveals a mode that makes the game look like an old samurai movie. The feature was revealed as part of aGhost of Tsushimagameplay videothat also showed protagonist Jin in battle with Mongols.
To giveGhost of Tsushimathat old, samurai movie feel, players will be able to turn on the game’s Samurai Cinema mode. Turning on this mode puts a black and white filter on the game, also adding what seems to be a film-grain quality. Samurai Cinema seems to look best when Jin is in standoffs with Mongols, as he stares them down and the camera zooms in as each character inches towards their weapon.

However, it seems that players can use Samurai Cinema in all parts of the game, with Sucker Punch Productions also showing it in action when Jin is fighting and riding around the island of Tsushima. In fight scenes, the effect doesn’t work as well, as thegame’s high-quality graphicsit’s not a samurai movie filmed on an old, black and white camera.
It should look much better when Jin is just going around Tsushima though as thedeveloper’s decision not to use waypointsto tell players way to go will also help the game to look like a movie. The trailer suggests that the black and white style won’t stop players from being able to use the wind to see where they’re going, but players may want to make sure first.
Ghost of Tsushimamay have other cool features for samurai movie fans. The development team has shown itself to be a huge fan of the feudal Japanese style, having offered aGhost of TsushimaPS4 themeto those who pre-order the game. The theme has been created so that it looks like it has been drawn with an ink brush, an art style that has been in Japan since the 14th century.
Not all players will choose to useGhost of Tsushima’s Samurai Cinema mode, though, so they can see all of theblood and gore teased in the game’s rating. Jin is seen getting into some incredible fights in the trailer, but while standoffs look great in black and white, larger fights can look brilliant in color.
