God of War Ragnarokreviews are out ahead of the game’s launch later this week, and one reviewer is being sent death threats over their evaluation of Sony Santa Monica’s new game.God of War Ragnarokreviews have been near universally positive, making it one of the highest-rated new game releases of the year and thehighest-rated first-party PlayStation 5 gameto date. Most reviewers were in agreement thatGod of War Ragnarokis a landmark release, but there is one outlier.
ManyGod of War Ragnarokreviewsawarded the game with a perfect score, or near-perfect score, with one exception. While the main IGN website gaveGod of War Ragnarokone of its many 10/10 scores, the IGN Korea outlet gaveGod of War Ragnaroka 6/10, its lowest score to date. Of course, it’s entirely reasonable that one could play the game and come away with a different opinion of it since video games are subjective, but that has not stopped an angry fan from sending a death threat to the reviewer.

Bae Sang Hyun, a Korean game developer and filmmaker who sometimes writes reviews for IGN Korea, wrote theGod of War Ragnarokreview that gave the game its 6/10 score. The review’s assessment is basically thatGod of War Ragnarokis too similar to the 2018God of Wargame, saying it plays more like DLC to that game as opposed to a full-blown sequel. There are many who disagree with that view, but regardless, one should be allowed to express their opinion on a video game without being called a “Korean lowlife.” The commenter added, “I’ll beat your ass and humble you so good that you wouldn’t even dare write this s***. Imma kill you.”
Unfortunately, this is far from the first time that death threats have been sent over a video game. In fact, death threats have been commonplace in the gaming industry for years, sometimes aimed at reviewers who offer dissenting opinions to the consensus, and other times aimed at game developers themselves. For example,Cyberpunk 2077developer CD Projekt Red was hit with death threatsafter delaying the game, andThe Last of Us 2Abby actor Laura Bailey received death threats from fans who didn’t like the character.
The anonymity of the Internet means thatdeath threats and general harassmentare unlikely to go away any time soon, if ever. It’s just a matter of time until another figure from the gaming industry gets death threats for their work or opinion.
God of War Ragnaroklaunches November 9 for PS4 and PS5.
