Ubisoft recently unveiledStar Wars Outlaws, and it looks like it could be exactly what fans want from an open-worldStar Warsgame. In it, players take on the role of thief Kay Vess in an adventure scouring the seedy underbelly of the galaxy. Not much is known aboutStar Wars Outlaws' story yet, but it will surely be filled with all the classicStar Warsgoodness that fans of the franchise have come to expect.
Star Wars Outlawswill be telling a brand-new story set betweenThe Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi. While the story willfollow aStar Warscharacter disconnected from the Rebellion, the Rebel Alliance will likely play a role in the larger narrative. This was a turbulent time in theStar Warsgalaxy that required even the most unlikely of heroes to take up arms against the Galactic Empire, and that duty may fall on Vess to some degree too, intentionally or otherwise.

The Rebellion May Play a Part in Star Wars Outlaws
The Empire Strikes Backsaw the Rebel Alliance fall to its lowest point during the original trilogy. After the Rebels destroyed the Death Star, the Galactic Empire responded by attacking their secret base on Hoth. This forced the Rebels to flee, Luke Skywalker to head to Dagobah, and pushed the galaxy further into war. The Rebels were shattered, the heroes were split up, and things only got worse from there.Han Solo was frozen in Carbonite, Luke failed to beat Darth Vader, and the remaining Rebels fled into the unknown.
Return of the Jedipicks up one year afterThe Empire Strikes Back, and a lot happened in that time. The Rebel fleet is able to reform,Luke trains with Yoda, and Leia is able to discover the location of Han Solo. Along with that, the galaxy is plunged even further into war with crime syndicates like Crimson Dawn taking up arms against the Empire. While none of it has been seen on-screen, dozens of comic books have explored this period in great detail.
Star Wars Outlawswill be taking place during this turbulent time, and the brief reveal trailer had a shot of someone that looked like Han Solo frozen in Carbonite. This could simply be an Easter egg, or it could hint at Kay Vess' larger involvement with the Rebel Alliance. The hunt for Han Solowas a major part of this era, and Vess may play an integral role in helping the Rebels discover his location.
Han Solo was moved around a lot before Leia discovered him at the beginning ofReturn of the Jedi. After Boba Fett took him from Cloud City, Crimson Dawn kidnapped him in an elaborate plot to get the Hutts to declare war on the Empire.Qi’ra fromSolo: A Star Wars Storyorchestrated the whole thing and attempted to auction him off. Fett succeeded in stopping her, but these events almost plunged the galaxy further into war. There is a chance that Kay Vess played a part in either stealing or saving Solo, but players will just have to wait and see.
Kay Vess may have also been involved in helping the Rebel fleet reunite after the events ofTheEmpire Strikes Back. The Rebels devised a plan known as Operation Starlight that saw them attempt to steal a centuries-old droid from Coruscant. This droid was supposed to help the Rebels create an unbreakable code so that they could reunite in secret. Vess is supposed to be attempting the heist of the century, andstealing this droid from Coruscantseems important. The planet may not be in the Outer Rim, but Ubisoft could be hiding the game’s actual narrative very well.
