The game is full of quests and side quests that are all filled withintriguing twists and turns, as well as a host of colorful characters.
One questline of particular intrigue involves an assassination attempt on the Empress ofBattahl, Nadinia. In the follow up mission, players will be tasked with finding out the truth behind the plot and finding out who is responsible. Here is everything you need to know tocomplete “A Candle In The Storm”, including all possible endingsto the tale.

How To Complete “A Candle In The Storm” Quest
Start The Quest In Volcanic Island Camp
Before players can begin the “A Candle In The Storm” quest inDragon’s Dogma 2,they must firstprotect the ruler of Battahlfrom an assassin in"Shadowed Prayers". Regardless of the result of this quest, you will be able to begin the next chapter in this storyline byvisiting Menella at theVolcanic IslandCamp.
Toget to the Volcanic Island camp, players will need totravel south of Battahl’s capital city, Bakbattal. you’re able to do this by journeying down the path to the left as you exit the city. Continue along the road to the south and follow it as it bends back to the east, where you will encounter and need to pass through Drabnir’s Grotto. Once on the other side of that, you’ll reach theVolcanic IslandCamp.

Once at the camp, follow the path to the left as it winds around the settlement in an upward direction until you are close to theHot Springs, where you can speak to Lamond andunlock the Warfarer vocation. Before you reach the small ladder to the springs, you will bestopped by Menella, who wants justice for the assassination (or attempted assassination) of the Empress. You will need to go back to Bakbattahl and speak to the perpetrator in the gaol there to progress the mission.
Since neither Bakbattahl nor Volcanic Island Camphave Portcrystals, it would be a good idea to put one in each if you have them, as you’ll need to go back and forth between the two settlements a couple of times.
Speak To The Assassin
Once you have seen Menella, head back to Bakbattahl andspeak to the assassin in the gaol. you may find the building in the northern part of the city, which is on the left side as you enter it.
Once you have reached the prison, take a left down the hall and speak to the NPC in the first cell on the right, named Herman. To get information out of him as to who put him up for the job, you have the option to either question him or bribe him with gold for answers. If you choose to question him, he will dismiss you, but if yougive him 5,000 G, he will tell you he was working for the Coral Snakes and that you should speak to the guild member who is also in the prison.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get any information out of the Coral Snake yet, as he won’t engage in dialogue with you. Instead, head back to Menella, where she devises a plan on how to draw out those responsible by setting up a fake meeting. With this information, you can speak to the Coral Snakes member,Ashe, to set up the meeting. However, the dialogue with Menella and the Coral Snakes member will only work if Nadinia was saved from assassination in “Shadowed Prayers”. For those that weren’t so fortunate, there is a simple way to resolve the matter.
What To Do If Nadinia Dies in “Shadowed Prayers”
In the previous quest,“Shadowed Prayers”, players are tasked with identifying the individual trying to assassinate the Empress Nadinia. Should you not be successful in protecting the monarch and find her killed at the temple, there is a simple way of correcting this error and continuing the storyline as intended.
If Nadinia is assassinated in “Shadowed Prayers”,simply take a Wakestoneto theBattahl Morgueand use it on her tobring her back to life. This will trigger the routine cutscene for whenan NPC is revived, and she will walk out of the temple. As you exit the temple, you will find Nadinia walking toward you, whereby she will instigate a dialogue and ask that youdeliver the letter to Menellaat the Volcanic Island Camp. Give this letter to Menella, and she will devise the plan to set up the meeting as per the usual questline.
Speak To Ashe
Once players have visited Menella again, they will be able togo back to Bakbattahl gaoland speak to the Coral Snake, Ashe. He is found by turning left as you enter the prison and following the hall past the assassin on the left side.Interact with himas you would any other NPC and advise him that you have the Empress in your custody and reveal the location so that he can pass it on to his boss.
Once this has been completed, head back out of the city tofind Menellarunning towards you. She will confirm that everything is set and it is time to begin preparing for the arrival of the culprit. Players will need to meet Menella at the nearby house, which is marked by theyellow symbol on the game’s map.
What To Do If You Let Ashe (Coral Snake) Escape Gaol
Some players will, unfortunately, letAshego by opening his cell door in Bakbattahl prison, thinking they would be able to apprehend and interrogate him themselves. This isn’t the case, however, asunlocking a door triggers a small cutscenewhereby Asheescapes the prisonwithout players having the opportunity to grab him. While this is not ideal for the sake of progressing the story, there is a silver lining to the action, asthere is a Seeker Token in the cell.
If Ashe escapes and you now need to find him to arrange the meeting, you will thankfully stillfind him in Bakbattahl. The Coral Snake, who funnily somewhat resemblesGod Of War’s Kratos, can be found holed up in the nearby tavern and will be available to talk to once you have devised the plan with Menella.

Should You Support Or Oppose The Empress' Proposal?
After arriving at the empty house for the meet up,players will encounter both Nadinia and Menella, who discuss possible strategies for how to handle the matter. The Empress wishes to be a part of the plan and wants to bait the criminal, whereas Menella has found a false Empress to take her place in case another attempt is made on her life. Nadinia is not on board with this idea as she feels the ruse will be discovered and the whole operation compromised, leaving players with the choice of supporting or opposing her involvement.
What Happens If You Oppose The Empress?
If playersagree with Menellaand deem it too great a risk for the Empress to be present for the plan, then theduplicate Nadinia takes her placefor the arrival of the killer. This ruse is found out by the culprit, and theassassin flees the scene, resulting in the Coral Snakes ambushing you and Menella. Once you survive the encounter, Menella deems the operation and failure and hopes she can remain vigilant enough to keep her alive. For completing the quest, you receive19,000 G,3 Jasper, and 4,800 XP.
What Happens If You Support The Empress?
If you support the Empress, you will get a good ending to the quest. Theculprit correctly identifies Nadiniaand asks that you kill her, claiming she is better as a martyr for the people. All players need to do in this situation is draw their weapons and stand next to the Empress before the culprit stops them since they have proven trustworthy and can be identified by Nadinia.
Once identified, Menella enters the room, and the villain, Irmhild, is placed under arrest by both NPCs. This completes the quest, earning players25,000 G, 4,800 XP, and theRing of Amplification.
What Happens If You Attack The Suspect?
A third potential ending to “A Candle In The Storm” is for players toattack the criminal outside the housebefore they enter and identify the Empress. This is not the best ending of the quest and will earn you the same amount of gold and XP as opposing Nadinia.
After attacking the unknown individual, they will be caught by Menella and Nadinia and be told they will be interrogated for their involvement in the assassination attempt. The suspect will refuse to do so, instead opting to take their own life.
