WhileIs It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon?primarily follows the story of Bell Cranel and his journey to becomeone of Orario’s strongest adventurers, the series gives its due screentime to Bell’s many love interests, as every woman he meets is charmed by his innocence, purity, and naivety. Goddess Freya is no different as she remained beguiled from the moment she laid eyes on him, wanting him ever since.
Although there are plenty of reasons already apparent for anyone to fall for Bell Cranel, Freya’s obsession still seems a bit out of place, as she initially had no direct reason to be so vehemently intrigued by him. The lengths she has gone to in order to obtain Bell’s love and attention are also rather extreme, prompting many to wonder what caused such an infatuation. However, piecing together some details from the series can offer a vague picture ofFreya’s obsession over Bell.

Bell’s Pure Soul
Bell has been the center ofinterest for many of Orario’s women, both humans and Goddesses alike. While this may be a common theme in many anime series,DanMachiactually presents a reasonable explanation for this – Bell’s pure soul. From the very beginning of the series, it’s been made apparent that the young adventurer holds no ill-intentions for anyone, and his motives for becoming an adventurer stem from the heart.
Freya, beingthe Goddess of beauty and fertility, has a unique ability that allows her to see the color of a person’s soul, with the varying hues revealing the purity of the soul. According to Freya, Bell’s soul is pure white, something even she has never witnessed before. His transparent soul has since then become Freya’s primary interest, as she looks over him from the top of Babel, planning her next move to charm the boy into joining her familia.

Freya’s Intentions With Bell
On the surface, Freya simply wants Bell to become one of her prized possessions, to sit by her side as a showpiece to further her stance as Orario’s strongest. However, her desire for Bell goes far beyond the simplistic view of attaining his love, since she is primarily motivated by her destiny to find her husband. In Norse mythology,Odr is the husband of Goddess Freya, and while her love for Odr knows no bounds, it isn’t necessarily reciprocated by her husband.

Odr is known for going on journeys and expeditions for long periods of time, leaving Freya sad and alone, even forcing her to cry tears of red gold as she goes looking for him. This very tragic talehas been used as the basis for Freya in the series, meaning she is on a constant journey to find the one she deems as Odr. For now, Bell seems to be the one she regards as her love, as a soul so pure and white can only belong to her husband. Although the series is yet to confirm such aspirations on Freya’s part, it is more than likely to be the case since most of Orario’s Gods and Goddesses have been based on real-world mythologies and tales.
Freya’s Attempts At Keeping Bell Pure
Since Bell’s pure soul is what Freya is after, it’s plausible that she would attempt to deter any attempts made at tainting his soul. This was also evident from her extreme reaction to Goddess Ishtar’s attempt at claiming Bell. Since Ishtar is the Goddess of sexual love, claiming Bell would have meant taking away his purity and stripping him off his innocence. Upon learning Ishtar’s unholy intentions, Freya invaded Orario’s entertainment district and forcefully sent Ishtar back to Heaven, claiming that she had gone too far by trying to take Bell.
Freya also sees Ais Wallenstein as a threat, especially considering Bell’s own infatuation with her. However, Freya is yet to take any action against her, most likely due to her own interest in Ais ‘golden’ soul, one that is unique but doesn’t come close to Bell’s purity. She has also shown her dislike for otherwomen that fawn over Bell, as she not only views them as competition but also as a threat to taint Bell’s pure soul. Freya has even made several attempts to tap into Bell’s true potential by forcing him into difficult situations, yet none of those incidents have ever threatened Bell’s purity.

For now, it’s obvious that Bell’s purity is what Freya is truly after, and anything that even remotely threatens to take that away from her will be dealt with an iron fist. SinceGods and humans cannot procreate, Freya’s intentions seem to be pure, however, the true complexity of her actions can only unravel as the series reveals more details.
