Spanning nearly a decade,Guardians of the Galaxy film Vol. 3is almost here, and fans have been wondering what implications the film will have on the MCU’s future. But according to director James Gunn, the third and finalGuardians of the Galaxyfilm is set to be a standalone story.
The MCU has always been about setting up the next overarching story. That is no different post-Infinity Saga, as this new Multiverse Saga has been focused on Kang the Conqueror, the time-traveling, multiversal adversary. Kang’s variant was first introduced in the season finale ofLokibefore a different Kang served as the main villain inAnt-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. He will return forAvengers: The Kang Dynastyand likely star inAvengers: Secret Wars.

On Instagram, Gunn responded to a fan who hoped thatGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3serves as a standalone story rather than focusing on setting up Kang’s future. “Please tell me this film is focused on the GOTG and not setting up more Kang stuff. I love Kang and the multiverse, but the GOTG franchise is my favorite in the MCU. Volume 2 still gives me goosebumps in that final battle, there’s just so much emotion,” the fan wrote. Gunn ensures that the film will be about ending theGuardians of the Galaxy’sstory. “‘Vol 3’ is about ending the story of theseGuardians, not about setting up anything else. I don’t even know what’s going on with the other Marvel movies,” Gunn said.
Kang and his variants will likely be scattered throughoutseveral of Marvel Studios' MCU movies and shows, even before the two upcomingAvengersfilms. Consequently, it’s hard for fans not to look into every upcoming MCU project to see how it fits into the grander scheme of the story. On the other hand, it’s also refreshing to have an MCU movie that’s not worried about setting things up for another entry and is instead focused on telling a complete story.
