Developers at Konami are interested in making newSuikodengames, according to an interview at the Tokyo Game Show 2022 convention. The announcement of remasters for both the originalSuikodenandSuikoden 2has triggered some hope in fans of the JRPG franchise that new games in the series could be made in the future. It seems they aren’t the only ones hoping that’s a realistic possibility, as even some key Konami developers admit they’d like to see moreSuikodengames in the future, too.

TheSuikodenfranchise has been dormant for some time. The most recent release in the series was a PSP game released in 2012 that was never localized for the west. The last main seriesSuikodentitle,Suikoden 5, was released in 2006 on PlayStation 2. Then there’s the fact that Konami hasn’t shown an interest in developing new games in recent years. Many fans had given up on the possibility ofSuikodencoming back, at least untilFriday’s announcement of theSuikodenandSuikoden2 remasters.

Some Konami game developers are embracing the excitement around the new announcement and are sharing their feelings aboutSuikoden’s future. Speaking with IGN, Konami producer Yasuo Daikai said directly that he would “really like to keepmaking moreSuikodengamesin the future.” He said this in response to a question regarding what the remasters would mean for theSuikodenfranchise.

Daikai isn’t in any way confirming plans forKonamito continue working onSuikodengoing forward. He did have some encouraging words, however. He asks that fans ofSuikoden"will root for us and support us," saying that he hopes Konami will be able to deliver on fans' promises. That’s about as close as Daikai can get to saying that, ifSuikodenis going to have a future, it depends on the remasters forSuikodenandSuikoden 2being successful.

While there may or may not be moreSuikodenin the future, fans of the JRPG franchise have another option going forward.Eiyuden Chronicleis a spiritual successor toSuikodendeveloped by Yoshitaka Murayama, who produced, directed, and wrote the first twoSuikodengames, and Junko Kawano, the artist for multipleSuikodengames.Suikodensequel or not, there’s a lot for fans that’s worth looking forward to.

It’s also true, however, that this is the best chance forSuikodento make a resurgence in over a decade. Konami may or may not have the resources todevelop a newSuikodengameon its own, but if the remasters are successful then perhaps it will license the property out to another developer. It all depends on the success of theSuikodenremasters when they arrive in 2023, though.
