Magic Legendsis currently in open beta on PC and fans are getting a first taste of theMagic: The Gatheringinspired ARPG. The free-to-play game is alreadystirring up controversy and criticismand, amongst other issues, many players are eager to find a way to exit the spam-filled general chat.

From the moment players arrive in the first sharedMagic Legendszone, after a very short tutorial level, they will likely find a chat box in the lower lefthand corner of the game full of spam commands like !freepacks !promocode and !mute. The stream of spam has been essentially constant during our time in the game so far and makes the general zone chat a pretty unhelpful feature. If players want to get rid of the chat for a while until things (hopefully) normalize, there is luckily a way.

Surprisingly, hiding or muting the chat inthe multiplayer ARPGisn’t quite as quick or intuitive as players might hope. To figure out how to opt out of the chat, some resourceful players used the console to pull up all possible commands and came up with some options that will get the job done. Here’s what players who are sick of seeing !freepromopack should do…

First, players who want to completely block and mute everyone in chat who is not already on their friends list can use this command: “/whitelist_chat 1”

That’s a powerful command, so just keep in mind that it’s going to make it hard for anyone to get in touch with you if they aren’t already a confirmed friend. If players use that whitelist command and later want to undo the action, they can enter this command: “/whitelist_chat 0”

That said, there is another, less nuclear, option. To silence chat in a particular zone, players can use: “/channelleave zone”

The only tricky thing about the second option, is that to rejoin the zone players need to know the exact name of the zone chat they are attempting to turn back on.

Magic Legendsis still just at the start of its open beta period, so hopefully the developers are listening closely and compiling a long list of features to improve the game’s current experience. For starters, a quicker and easier way to toggle chat on and off would definitely help improve the quality of life for players who are looking to maintain the immersion and avoid constant spam messages.

Magic: Legendsis available now as an open beta on PC, and releases fully in 2021 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
