Developed by small studio Drastic Games, the new dungeon crawler stealth game dropped yesterday, May 11th. Players take the roles of the Guardians of Harmony, who are musicians summoned to defend the world of Symphonia from the corrupting forces of Discord. Described by its developers as a hybrid of dungeon crawler and looter shooter, players can unlock hundreds of items as they battle acrossSoundfall’scolorful isometric environments. While players have the option to adventure solo, Soundfall also supports 2-4 player local and online co-op. While the co-op is unfortunately not cross-platform, it is cross-gen on PlayStation and Xbox.
However, the game’s main feature isSoundfall’srhythm-based gameplay. Players need to time their movements with the soundtrack’s beat to deliver more powerful attacks. When paired withSoundfall’scolorful art design, this creates a pretty impressive display of audio-visual spectacle. The featured songs are a mix of licensed music and original compositions. PC users can also import their own music into the game, letting them battle along with their favorite beats. Unfortunately, this feature is not available to console players, and there’s no word on if the developers plan to implement it at a later date.
The game has seen an overwhelmingly positive reception so far.Soundfallhas a Very Positive rating on Steam, with over 90% of users Recommending the game, though it doesn’t yet have enough professional reviews for a Metacritic score. Still, those who have playedSoundfallpraised the game’s music and combat. A minority of Steam users expressed frustration withimporting music onSoundfall’sPC version, criticizing its reliance on 3rd party applications. However, most players didn’t seem to consider that a deal-breaking issue.
Anyone who wants to pick upSoundfallcan also grab it at a discount for a limited time. The game usually goes for $29.99, but the publisher is celebratingSoundfall’srelease with a small 15% discount on all platforms. As a result, PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch players can grab the newrhythm-based dungeon crawlerfor $25.49 until May 18th.
Soundfallis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
