EA’sMass Effectfranchise was once one of the most-celebrated action-RPGs in the industry, earning huge critical acclaim and a dizzying number of rewards. However, the originalMass Effecttrilogy concluded in 2012, and it was followed up by the lacklusterMass Effect: Andromeda. Things have been quiet on theMass Effectfront since then, but we now know that a newMass Effectgame is in active development at BioWare.
No additional information is available for thenewMass Effectgamebeyond that it is in development and that it is being directed by Mike Gamble. Gamble previously worked onMass Effect 2,3, their DLCs, and most recently, the controversialAnthem, as a producer. The newMass Effectgame is reportedly “in very early development,” so fans shouldn’t expect to see anything concrete on it anytime soon, and it will most likely be targeting next-generation platforms.

Gamble also worked on 2017’sMass Effect: Andromedaas a producer.Andromedaearned the lowest review scores of anyMass Effectgame, with many complaining about technical issues and comparatively poor graphics. WithAndromedaandAnthembeing Gamble’s latest game development credits, there may be some that are understandably weary about him directing the newMass Effectgame.
However, Gamble was also involved in the development ofMass Effect 2and3, both of which were critically-acclaimed games. Not only that, but the development of bothAndromedaandAnthemwere reportedly pretty messy, with other factors at work beyond Gamble’s control.
Earlier this year, Kotaku revealed themessy development ofAnthem, and how the game was more or less doomed to fail from the start. Kotaku is also the source of this information on a newMass Effectgame, as the publication has revealed plans forAnthemto get a complete overhaul. FixingAnthemis is perhaps one way that BioWare will be able to win back some of its disgruntled fans, but another way would be to release a quality newMass Effectgame, not to mention the upcomingDragon Age 4.
With BioWare’s next game beingDragon Age 4, it will likely be quite some time until the newMass Effectgame is unveiled. But knowing that a new game in the series is in development at all may be enough to tide some fans over.
