SinceThe Rise of Skywalker, Disney and Lucasfilm have been trying to develop a newStar Warsmovie, but several projects have been either delayed or removed from the production slate indefinitely. As reported byDeadline, Lindelof is currently working on the script for a newStar Warsfilm, and production is likely a long way off. It was reportedly important to Lucasfilm and Lindelof that a director be brought on so that their vision for the film is included in the script. Plot details are being kept under wraps and this project appears to be one of the more secretive films being produced by the studio. That being said, the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm were quick to secure a director long before the film goes into production shows that they are pursuing this project intently. The last film in the franchise to be released in theaters was 2019’sStar Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded the sequel trilogy.
Lindelof is primarily known for his work in television and is best known for co-creating and executive producing the hit ABC drama seriesLost. He is also credited with creatingHBO’s award-winning limited seriesWatchmen, which served as a sequel to Alan Moore’s legendary graphic novel, and the HBO seriesThe Leftovers.Lindelof has also written numerous Hollywood films including Ridley Scott’sAlienPrequelPrometheusand J.J, Abrams’Star Trekfilms, as well as the 2020 horror satireThe Hunt, which he co-wrote with fellowLostcreator Carlton Cruise.
Obaid-Chinoy is a two-time academy award-winning filmmaker. She won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2012 for her filmSaving Faceand again in 2016 for her filmA Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.More recently Obaid-Chinoy, directed two episodes of the Disney Plus seriesMs. Marvel. Obaid-Chinoy is a very interesting choice for aStar Warsfilm, as she is primarily known as a documentary filmmaker. She was brought on specifically for her documentary background so thatMs. Marvelcould accurately depict Pakistan’shistory and culture. It’s unknown at the moment whether she will bring her signature style to Lindelof’sStar Warsfilm, but with the recent release ofAndor, it seems plausible.
Andorhas a very realistic tone and style, with the show often depicting what life could be like for the average person in theStar Wars galaxy under the Empire. It seems reasonable that Obaid-Chinoy could use her documentary skills to similar results.
