Ubisoft’sAssassin’s Creedfranchise is known for exploring historical settings and events from an interesting and unique perspective. It’s never clear how the Templars and Assassins were involved in shaping the outcomes of wars and battles for power. South American history seems to be an underutilized part of the world where dozens of historical periods could easily serve as entertaining and/or engaging settings for the next entry intheAssassin’s Creedseries.

The reality is that South American countries had to fend off European colonization, and from that great leaders, empaths, and fighters emerged to protect their people and their land. Even through a fictional video game lens likeAssassin’s Creed, these difference makers' stories and experiences deserve to be told once again.

7Bartolome de Las Casas' Fight For Freedom

In the world ofAssassin’s Creed, it feels fitting that an unassuming friar would play a pivotal role in fighting for the rights of those in need. Bartolome de Las Casas isn’t the most well-known historical figure, but the Spanish-born Dominican friar was a driving force in fighting for the rights of natives and their freedom. He lived from 1484-1566 and had to face European colonization and conquest head-first.

Gamers would likely take on the role of someone serving under the direction and/or tutelage of Bartolome de Las Casas. Together they could help drive back the forces that utilized inhumane and uncivil forms of conquest.

6The Rule Of Simon Bolivar

Now, one would assume a man labeled as “The George Washington of South America” would have a mixed history that’s not as positive as directed historical textbooks would leave one to believe. In the case of Simon Bolivar, he was instrumental in the South American independence movement and is known as one of the most pivotal revolutionary leaders of all time. The country of Bolivia was named in honor of the Venezuelan soldier, statesman, and eventual dictator of Peru.

AnAssassin’s Creedgame set in 1800s Peru would deliver an experience not yet seen in the series. Players would likely fight alongside Bolivar in pivotal engagements, such as the Battle of Ayacucho. The Peruvian War of Independence would be the main narrative driving force, but behind the scenes, players would likely have to eliminate Spanish military leaders and strategists to help South America overcome their forces.

5The Spanish-American War

With boats and naval combat becoming an integral part of severalAssassin’s Creedgames, setting a new entry in the South American Caribbean as well as island nations like Cuba and Puerto Rico could lean into that gameplay aspect. In terms of culture and environment, it’d provide an engaging look at how these Latin communities were drastically affected by colonization and occupation.

The Spanish-American War lasted over three months, and despite being a war between Spain andthe United States of America, other nations were forced to serve as the battlefield for these warring powers.

4Spanish Colonization Of The Caribbean

It seems that there were hundreds of years where South American lands had to fight off Spanish and European colonization. The Caribbean had to endure this harsh reality in the late 1400s, which by then had seen the permanent settlement of Spanish forces. Sadly the reason why the Spanish lost interest in the Caribbean wasn’t due to altruistic enlightenment but rather the discovery of more profitable occupations as a result of their conquests in Peru and against the Aztec Empire in the years that followed their settlement in the Caribbean.

Adapting this foranAssassin’s Creedgamewould feel like a return toAssassin’s Creed 4: Black Flagin terms of there being access to boats and naval combat serving as a solid portion of the game’s combat mechanics and experience.

3The Conquest of the Aztec and Inca Empires

The Aztec and Inca Empires are home to some of the most dazzling architecture and culture the world has ever seen. When placing the conquest of them historically into what anAssassin’s Creedversion of events would look like, it immediately becomes obvious how engaging it would be as a setting.

Often the player takes on the role of an assassin looking to navigate conflict and turn the tides in the favor of one group over another. Hernan Cortes, who led the conquering of these empires, would likely serve as the main antagonist and be the final target for the player to kill. Disease also played a large role in the Spanish killing the native population, so it’s unclear how that would factor in as well.

2The Search For El Dorado

Most people of a certain generation are familiar with the search for El Dorado, not because of historical textbooks butan animated DreamWorks moviefrom 2000 calledThe Road To El Dorado.

Assassin’s Creedoften leans into the myths and legends of history, painting them in a way that makes the mysteries true. A game taking place in the 16th or 17th century could have the player living in El Dorado or possibly in search of it. The English family known as the Raleighs could serve as the primary antagonistic force the player must overcome, while the Spaniard occupation could be the common enemy threat players will have to combat in the open world.

1The Mayan Empire

When looking at South American history, it’s hard not to become fascinated with the Mayan Empire. It’s a culture and people that are often associated with conspiracy theoriesrelated to alien lifevisiting Earth and ascension. In terms of technology, they were seen as vastly ahead of their contemporaries but seemingly vanished out of nowhere. Their temples and cities were a beautiful blend of stoic architecture that naturally blended with nature’s overgrowth.

AnAssassin’s Creedgame set during the pinnacle of the Mayan Empire could have the player witnessing what happened to the Mayans. The series is known for exploring unexplained historical events and molding them into a timeline filled with betrayal and mystery.
