The originalPokemongames brought to life the first 151 Pokemon and dropped players into the Kanto region. Within these games, each creature was represented by a sprite, giving players their first impression of these Pokemon in their 2D world. These designs were created in pixelated form but, for the first generation Mankey sprite, onePokemonfan decided to update that look.

Pokemon Red and Bluewere released in North America in 1998 and were part of the first installments ofthePokemonvideo game series. Mankey is labeled as the 56th Pokemon and evolves into Primeape at level 28.

This impressive time-lapse comes from u/thefairyisdead, and it transforms a memorable sprite from the first generation into an impressive painting. This short 30 second long time-lapse tracks exactly how this artist took the original sprite and transformed it into something a bit more realistic. In this time-lapse they place the original design out and begin to trace out their own shape over the top. They sketch out the curled tail, the three-fingered hands and feet, as well as the nose and eyes. Once that shape is sketched out, u/thefairyisdead colors in the Mankey all white before adding in the brown and pink on this Pokemon’s limbs. The original Mankey fromPokemon’s first generationresembles a pixelated ball with limbs and this work does well to smooth the original design’s edges.

ThisFighting-type Pokemon’soriginal design is quite pixelated, with just the rough shape and minor details visible. What this fan did was perfectly round the edges that the original technology was incapable of doing and convey exactly what the original design hinted at. They do not list exactly what they used to recreate this Mankey, but they did make sure to show the color palette with which they worked.

The original designs fromPokemon Red and Bluemay not have remained the same over the generations ofPokemon, but they still remain memorable because oftheir place in thePokemonfranchise. Even though this Mankey design didn’t last long, it still is a nostalgic design for those players who took toPokemon Red and Blue.

Then again, the limitations of the technology at the time meant that this Mankey looked very much like a ball with limbs. Other generations did a much better job at conveying this Pokemon’s hair and aggressive nature. Either way, thisPokemonfan did justice to one of the original looks for a memorable Fighting-type Pokemon.
