July 2020 is coming up, and with it will be a new Research Breakthrough encounter inPokemon GO.TheJune Research Breakthrough Pokemonwas Trapinch, so if players want to get their hands on this month’s reward, they don’t have much time left. Starting on July 1 at 1 PM PDT, a new Pokemon will be available.
Larvitar, also known as the Rock Skin Pokemon, will be available up until Saturday, August 1 at 1 PM PDT forPokemon GOplayers. Lucky players can even get their hands on a Shiny Larvitar. The Pokemon eventuallyevolves into Tyranitar, which is strong in battle raids. Players can get a Research Breakthrough by gaining seven stamps through completing Research Tasks. Getting these seven stamps doesn’t just hand a player a Larvitar, but gives them the opportunity to catch one.

TheJuly Field Research Taskshave been revealed, along with other in-game tasks for the coming month. The tasks aren’t too different from June’s tasks, and are designed to be easier to complete from home due to the global situation. There aren’t many meta-relevant Pokemon in the tasks, which may disappoint competitive players, but at least they’ll be easier to complete for most players and give more people a shot at a Larvitar.
Trapinch was largely seen as anunpopular Research Breakthrough reward, due to it not being very competitive in raids or meta, so it makes sense that Larvitar would be this month’s Pokemon. Even thoughTyranitar’s Smack Down move was nerfed, the Pokemon is still viable in the metagame. Larvitar evolves into Pupitar for 25 Candy, and then into Tyranitar for 100 Candy.
Having a Larvitar or Tyranitar on hand would be useful in the upcomingGO Fest 2020, which is a challenging test of trainers' skills. The three-week build to the event starts this Friday, and like many otherPokemon GOevents, will be held remotely. Anyone in the world can purchase a GO Fest ticket, unlike last year’s event where trainers gathered in their cities.
APremier Cup PvPmay also be coming toPokemon GO, where meta-relevant Pokemon will really shine. Tyranitar has access to powerful moves like Bite, Crunch, and Stone Edge that puts its usefulness up with Pokemon like Blaziken, Dragonite, and Roserade. Although it may take a while to amass enough Candy to level up a Larvitar twice, getting access to a Tyranitar is easier than ever.
