The pair ofPokemonreleases have proven to be remarkably successful for Nintendo and Game Freak, and their reach will soon extend beyond just video games following the recent announcement thatScarlet and Violetcards are coming to thePokemon TCG.
The latest entries in Game Freak’s now almost-30-year-old line ofPokemonvideo games, 2022’sPokemon Scarlet and Violethad the biggest launch in Nintendo history, selling over 10 million copies in the first three days alone. Expanding on gameplay concepts introduced inPokemon Legends: Arceusearlier in the year, the duo of Switch titles feature the series’ first truly open world, letting players explore the Spanish-themed region of Paldea. Despite the addition of several new gameplay mechanics and the greatly expanded scope of the titles, a number of seriousPokemon Scarlet and Violetglitchescombined with poor performance have soured some long-timePokemonfans on the games.

In a new video posted to the r/PokemonScarletViolet subreddit, user ZumueDeleted shared a short video of an unusual encounter they had while exploring Paldea. The clip begins with ZumueDeleted riding their Miraidon on the outskirts of town when suddenly an alert sounds and they find themselves and their Eevee engaged in a battle with no opponent to be seen. As the two prepare to fight with theinvisible Pokemon, only a nameplate floating in empty space gives any indication that their enemy is the electrifying Ghost-type Pokemon Rotom.
Fans ofPokemon Scarlet and Violetwere amused by the clip of the unusual glitch, with one commenter cleverly remarking “I mean, it IS a ghost after all.” Referencing the infamousPokemon Red and Blueglitch that became the subject of schoolyard talk worldwide in the late 1990s, another Redditor joked that ZumueDeleted had encountered a MissingNo. While several responses to the video found the glitch to be good fodder for some well-made jokes, other comments saw the glitch as an indicator of ongoing problems with Pokemon and item spawns in the game. One user stated that this glitch is why they’ve given up hope of getting a Shiny indicator sound, suggesting that Game Freak should “redo the entirety of how and where things spawn.”
While it’s undoubtedly entertaining watching a trainer and their Pokemon getting ready to take on an invisible foe, the fact that a glitch like this is still present inPokemon Scarlet and Violetseveral months after release is sure to be a source of frustration for some viewers. Hopefully, ZumueDeleted will be luckier next time and their enemy will take a far more visible form, maybe even appearing as an adorableRotom cat feeder.
