Summary
One of the biggest reasons for fans to check outPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC is to gain access to a handful of returning mons previously unavailable in the Gen 9 Pokedex. Players diving into The Teal Mask DLC forPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill find there are nearly 100 returning mons from previous gens that have been added to the games. While this is great news for collectors looking to fill out their Pokedex, the mons chosen to return in the Teal Mask have the additional benefit of offering clues as to the location of the DLC’s land of Kitakami.
The Teal Masktakes the player outside of the borders of the Paldea Region to a new location known as Kitakami. Not much is known about this location in relation to the rest of thePokemonworld, but its rural Japanese village aesthetic clearly demonstrates that it is a far cry from the player character’s home of Paldea. Although no specific details are given about the location of Kitakami in the game, the critters that make up its Pokedex suggest that the land is close to another well-known region within thePokemonworld.

The Teal Mask’s Land of Kitakami Might Be Close to Johto
Kitakami’s Japanese-inspired design means it likely lies somewhere near the other regions based on areas of real-world Japan like Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. However, none of these regions are known to contain Kitakami and its main residential district of Mossui Town, meaning the locale has to exist outside the pre-existing regions. Taking a closer look atThe Teal Mask’s Pokedexreveals that the Johto Region is a likely neighbor to Kitakami and helps players get a better idea of where this land is in relation to the rest of thePokemonworld.
When players first arrive in Kitakami at the start of The Teal Mask DLC, they will like notice that a handful of critters originally from the Gen 2 gamesPokemon Gold and Silvercan be found on this initial route. Creatures like Yanma, Spinarak, andJohtonian Wooperare some of the first mons players will encounter, establishing that Kitakami is far enough away from Paldea that the original version of Wooper can be found natively here. Not only does this confirm Kitakami’s distance from Paldea, but the abundance of Gen 2 critters clues the player into the idea that Kitakami might be closer to Johto than they may have thought.
There are more than just these three mons that make up Kitakami’s Johto representation with a total of 25 critters from Gen 2 featured in the Kitakami Pokedex. This is a fairly significant number of mons from theJohto Regionfor generation that only included 100 total new mons, and some Gen 1 mons like Bellsprout who are significant to the Johto Region can also be found in Kitakami. Additionally, the rustic Japanese town look that Kitakami has going for it fits in line with Johto’s aesthetic being based on the historic Kansai region of real-world Japan.
One other factor to consider in determining Kitakami’s location in thePokemonworld is the existence of certain critters from Hisui, now known as the Sinnoh Region, like Basculegion andBloodmoon Ursaluna. In order for this Ursaluna to travel from Hisui, it would have needed to travel over water, meaning Kitakami is likely also close to the Sinnoh Region since its unlikely Ursaluna could have swum much further. With this information, the location of Kitakami is probably somewhere between Johto and Sinnoh, putting it in a region based on Japan’s real-world region of Tohoku, which is located between the regions that inspired Sinnoh and Johto, Hokkaido and Kansai.
