While there are still many details about thePlayStation 5that have yet to be revealed to the public, one thing we do know is that the console will have a solid state drive, or SSD. Sony has yet to reveal the size of the PS5 SSD in an official capacity, but a new leak claims that the PS5 SSD storage size is a whopping 2TB, which is a significant jump from the internal storage that seen in previous consoles.

The highest internal storage that players can get for the PS4 is 1TB (not counting the limitedPS4 Pro 500 Million Edition, which had 2TB), so the PS5 SSD being double that is quite a lot. Typically, console players would have to go out and purchase their own external storage to get 2TB. The significant size of the PS5 SSD claimed in this rumor makes it a little bit hard to believe, as 2TB SSDs regularly retail for hundreds of dollars by themselves.

Sony is unlikely to price the PS5 higher than $500, and in fact, the same “leak” where the SSD 2TB number is from points to a $499 price point. The leak also says that thePS5 reveal eventwill take place on February 5, but that seems highly unlikely since Sony has yet to make any announcements. Considering this, and the fact that the leak stems from 4chan, fans should take all this information with a grain of salt. However, enough legitimate video game leaks have originated at 4chan that claims like this can’t just be ignored completely.

Even if the PS5 does have a 2TB SSD, one has to wonder if that is even enough space for the console. Video game file sizes have ballooned to extremes in recent years, and it’s likely that they will just become larger as games themselves become bigger and more detailed. Combine this with thePS5 backward compatibility with PS4, and it seems as though console owners will fill up the 2TB SSD in no time at all.

For this reason, some may still opt to expand their PS5’s storage with an external hard drive, but others will want to stick to the internal SSD. Regardless of its size, thePS5 SSDhas a huge advantage, and that is cutting load times down drastically. The example given by Sony is that the fast-travel load times in theSpider-Mangame on PS4 Pro take 15 seconds, whereas it takes less than one second on the PlayStation 5.

The advantages of the PS5 using SSD are clear, but it still remains to be seen exactly how big the console’s internal storage will be. Official information should be released in the coming months.
