With Gamescom happening this week, loads of big game announcements have been pouring in at a rapid pace. New trailers were released for upcoming games likeSonic Frontiers,The Callisto Protocol, andHogwarts Legacy, while titles ranging fromNew Tales from the BorderlandstoQuantic Dream’sUnder the Waveswere shown for the first time. Amid all this, it was announced that the cult classic rhythm game/roguelike hybridCrypt of the NecroDanceris coming back with a new spin-off title,Rift of the NecroDancer.Series developer Brace Yourself Games made the announcement with a trailer that gives a good idea of how this new game will differ fromCrypt of the NecroDancer. Foregoing that game’s dungeon-crawling gameplay,Rift of the NecroDancerwill instead boast a number of modes that challenge players to move to the beat. Rift Mode will see players attacking enemies to the beat as they head down a track similarly toGuitar HeroorRock Band. Meanwhile, the Mini Game Mode will feature Cadence trying to adjust to the modern world in challenges reminiscent ofNintendo’sRhythm Heavenseries, while the Boss Battles Mode will have players taking on enemies inPunch-Out-style one-on-one fights.

Rounding things out, Brace Yourself Games states that theCrypt of the NecroDancerspin-offwill boast a brand-new soundtrack fromCryptcomposer Danny Baranowsky along with mod support, online leaderboards, and more to be revealed later. One thing that hasn’t been revealed yet isRift of the NecroDancer’s release date, but Brace Yourself did confirm that the game will be playable at PAX West next month, so with any luck, a date won’t be far behind.

Aside from the reveal of the new spin-off,NecroDancerfans have been treated well lately.Crypt of the NecroDancerreceived its first new update in over five yearsin June, and earlier this month saw the release of a brand new DLC pack for the game calledSynchrony. This new add-on introduces three new playable characters, online co-op and vs. multiplayer for up to eight players, and full mod support. That should give fans of the rhythm roguelike plenty to bide their time with while they wait for the next installment in the series.
