Matt Reeves’The Batmanlooks to take the DC character in a much darker, more brutal direction, a tonal aspect that is missing in 1997’sBatman & Robin. WhileThe Batmanis hoping to steer clear of that film’s cartoonish story, there is one connection, and that is Robert Pattinson revealing he wore George Clooney’s suit from the ’90s film.
While the darker tone forThe Batmanis both anticipated by some and cause for concern for others, this gritty and serious direction for the Caped Crusader’s film franchise has been par for the course ever since the disastrous results ofJoel Schumacher’sBatman and Robin. That said, it appearsBatman & Robincontinues to provide would-be Dark Knight’s with some assistance in their own attempts at playing the DC hero.

Speaking with the Japanese movie outlet Eiga, Pattinson recalled wearing Clooney’s suit for his screen test forThe Batman, as the actor compared his costume to the one from over 20 years ago. “I think [the screen test] was George Clooney, but I wore the original one. It looks cool, but it feels like a nightmare,” Pattinson said. “I can’t move. I was sweating all the time, and I was scared that I couldn’t do anything with this (laughs.) My suit is not only very cool, but it’s also incredibly well-designed. Even if I play a fight scene with a lot of movement, I can move anyway." It’s good to hear that Pattinson can move a lot more freely in his suit, and if the already released trailers are any indication, it appears that Batman will have his most brutal fight scenes yet.
Reeves' filmwill focus heavily on a noir-driven,detective version of Batman. The film will take place in Bruce Wayne’s second year of fighting as he is forced to deal with corruption and tracking down a new enemy known as the Riddler, who has a connection to his tragic past. Compared to Clooney’s more polished, clean looking suit, Pattinson’s more rustic and homemade design says a lot about his iteration of the character and where he is at in his crime fighting career.
Ever since the disastrousBatman & Robin,Batman has gone down a much darker routethat is more closely related to the comics. From Christopher Nolan’s take on the character in hisThe Dark Knighttrilogy to Ben Affleck giving fans a much more intimidating live-action version of the character inBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman is only getting darker as Reeves' upcoming film seems to explore a different, more unpredictable side of the hero.
Reeves recently spoke out about the inspiration for the character, sharing that one of the biggestinspirations for Pattinson’s Batman was Kurt Cobainand how he wanted to really explore another side of Bruce Wayne that makes him more of a recluse. Whatever the outcome forThe Batmanends up being, it will no doubt deliver a more faithful adaptation than what Clooney’s film presented.
The Batmanis set to release in theaters on March 4th, 2022.
