Marvel’s Spider-Man 2may feature some substantial horror elements, according to a newly surfaced rumor about Insomniac Games' upcoming title. This possibility showed up online just asInsomniac reaffirmed thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is a single-player game.

The third installment in theMarvel’s Spider-Manseries is still without an official release date, although likely not for much longer. Not only has Sony repeatedly said that this PlayStation 5 exclusive is targeting a late 2023 launch, but the company’snext PlayStation Showcase is also just around the corner. Given that context, it is plausible thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2will finally be treated to a release date at the May 24 event.

In the meantime, multiple fans have recently taken online to suggest thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2will incorporate horror elements, citing in-person information shared by some of the game’s voice cast. Responding to the latest video from YouTuber Evan Filarca, user nerdycollector209 claimed to have met Nadji Jeter, the voice of Miles Morales, who allegedly recommended he play the game with a headset and in the dark becauseMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is supposedly “a lot more scary” than its predecessors.

The video itself recapped Jeter’s 2022 SacAnime Summer panel, during which the actor said that Venom-like Symbiotes are “going to be everywhere” in the game. Filarca speculated this impliesMarvel’s Spider-Man 2might be a spiritual sequel to Activision’s 2008 gameSpider-Man: Web of Shadows, which featured a similar plot centered on a large-scale Symbiote invasion. “I’ve been sworn to secrecy, but you’re not far off,” user kevinplantz12 wrote in response to the video, adding that he heard some similar information from both Jeter and Tony Todd, the voice of Venom in the upcoming game.

While online claims from random fans should always be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism, the notion of a scarySpider-Mangame doesn’t sound too far-fetched for Insomniac’s next project. If anything,Venom’s appearance inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2already hinted as much, not least because Venom has historically been among Spider-Man’s scariest villains.

Moreover, both Jeter and Todd have a history of premature reveals during their interactions with fans. This was most recently exemplified in late March, when Todd let it slip that Insomniac’s upcoming game is planned to launch in September. TheSpider-Man 2voice actor later tried downplaying that release date leakwithout much success. While that obviously doesn’t confirm this newly surfaced rumor that the game will feature substantial horror elements, it does make the stated origin of the claim more believable.
