Summary
Despite having a packed roster of projects in the works,Marvel Studiosfaced another setback as they were forced to scrap yet another project. A planned series featuring a fresh character was reportedly axed, allegedly due to the poor reception of another film.
The Marvelsdid not quite achieve box-office success like many otherMarvelventures. The film garnered mixed reviews and failed to meet the lofty expectations set for it. However, it did introduce a promising new character whose story could have been expanded into a series. Unfortunately, that potential project has also been shelved.

As reported by Nexus Point News, industry insider DanielRPK revealed the cancellation of yet another Marvel project. A series centered around Monica Rambeau, also known as Photon, was purportedlyin development at Marvel Studiosbut has been scrapped in the aftermath ofThe Marvelsreception. Nonetheless, it has been indicated that her storyline will carry on in a different project.
First introduced as a young Monica in 2019’sCaptain Marvel, the character madeher official appearance as part of theWandaVisionseries. She later returned inThe Marvels(2023), where her role expanded significantly within the narrative. Moreover, she had previously been the focus ofher own solo comic book story. Penned by Eve L. Ewing and illustrated by Michael Sta. Maria,Monica Rambeau: Photonis a limited five-issue series that delves deep into the hero’s backstory. Originally slated to receive her own solo MCU series, plans were derailed due to the underwhelming reception ofThe Marvels. Whether the canceled show’s narrative would have been drawn from the comics remains unclear. Given her connections with other Marvel heroes, it is not surprising that she was set to receive her own story, only to have those plans canceled prematurely. However, on a more positive note, it has been indicated that her narrative will be integrated into other projects.
Despite being aware ofthe negative reviews received byThe Marvelsafter its premiere, Teyonah Parris, the actress portraying Monica Rambeau, did not allow the criticism to dampen her spirits. Instead, she remained optimistic about the possibility of a future series. In addition to the negative reviews surroundingThe Marvels, the cancellation may have also been influenced by recent cutbacks in Disney’s film lineup. Bob Iger had previously mentioned that the company needed to reduce its film output, resulting inthe cancellation of several projects. The news of the cancellation sparked mixed reactions. Some felt it was unnecessary to give her character her own spotlight, considering she is not as well-known as otherMarvelcharacters. Others simply were not interested altogether, while some eagerly anticipated further exploration of her character arc.
