Rumors thatKonamiand Sony have penned some sort of PlayStation exclusivity deal have resurfaced. As far back as 2020, particularly in the wake ofMicrosoft announcing its $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda, speculation began about studios that Sony might pick up. Konami was regularly mentioned, but it turned out that the Japanese publisher/developer wasn’t among the six companies Sony purchased in 2021.That didn’t stop rumors and, perhaps, wishful thinking. Specifically, fans wanted to see three of Konami’s most beloved and long-dormant franchises —Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid,andCastlevania— revived, and Sony stepping in to provide funding seemed an ideal scenario. The October 2022 announcement of theSilent Hill 2remake as a PS5 console exclusiveonly served to fuel the “leaks” about a Sony and Konami partnership.RELATED:Metal Gear Solid Singer Working on MGS3’s Snake Eater, But It’s Not For The Reason You ThinkMore recently,rumors about aMetal Gear Solid 3remakehave begun making the rounds, and these have been somewhat supported by comments from industry insiders. XboxEra podcast host Shpeshal Nick mentioned that the announcement of anMGS3remake might occur at the next PlayStation Showcase. This was followed by Windows Central’s Jez Cordon stating that he’d heard Sony and Konami had made a deal involvingSilent Hill, Metal Gear,and possibly a newCastlevaniagame.
These rumors about anMGS3remake byKonamihave been spurred, coincidentally enough, by two musicians. The first was Donna Burke, the singer behind the main themes of twoMetal Gear Solidgames, who shared an image of herself holding a card that said “Snake Eater.” Though it was later clarified that Burke was not working on a song for aMetal Gear Solid 3remake, or anyMGSproject for that matter, the idea remained in many people’s minds.
A couple weeks later, the composer forHogwarts Legacy, J. Scott Rakozy, shared a brief clip on Instagram of their version of theMetal Gear Solidtheme. This may have just been Rakozy having a bit of fun, but most of the artist’s Instagram posts are about official projects they’ve worked on, and it’s also worth noting that the video has since been removed.
Now, fans will bewaiting for an official date for the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, when the announcement, or lack thereof, about aMetal Gear Solid 3remake will all but confirm for many people whether Sony and Konami indeed have some sort of exclusivity deal. And if the rumors about bothSilent HillandMGSpan out, gamers will then tune their radars for any updates about theCastlevaniaseries. However, it is worth keeping in mind that, unlike theSilent Hill 2remake, the other two upcoming games in the franchise have not had their release platforms announced yet.
