The development team behindRustrevealed its plans for 2024, including the major features it intends to implement this year.Rust’s 2024 plans include significant gameplay changes, a unique server upgrade, and more.
Rustcelebrated its 10th anniversary in December. As one of the oldest andmost brutal survival games,Rusthas earned its reputation as a ruthless but addictive multiplayer experience. 2023 saw plenty of new features added toRust, like drones, security cameras, player-controlled turrets, an industrial system, and much more. AlthoughRusthas consistently added new content over its 10-year lifespan, its development team seems to have robust plans for the game’s future.

Facepunch explained that backpacks, nighttime lighting adjustments, performance improvements, anti-cheat upgrades, and the Nexus server system will be added toRustthis year. Backpacks, a new craftable attire that allows users to carry more items, are planned to be added to the game on February 1st. This is the only 2024 feature with a specific release date so far, but the post further explains that 2024’s adjustments to nighttime lighting will allow players to navigate in the dark more easily. Additionally, Facepunch intends to release Nexus sometime in 2024, which will cluster servers together and allow players to travel from one server to another by flying or boating across the edge of a map. This will not replaceRust’s current server format but will be an optional choice. Additionally, Facepunch confirmed that performance upgrades and anti-cheat improvements will be implemented throughout the year, with 2024’s performance updates focusing on memory usage and the return of global rendering.

Facepunch also confirmed thatRust’s pets feature has been put on the backburner and will not release this year. Also, the studio will work on improving old content as well in 2024, including reworks toRust’s older monumentsand improvements to various events.
The studio also shared an infographic that highlightedRust’s accomplishments over its 10-year lifespan. It shows thatRusthas sold over 16,000,000 copies, released over 370 content updates, raised over $1,700,000 for charities, and hit a peak player count of 244,000 users. In addition to being one of the best survival games, many also considerRustto be one of the best online open-world gameson the market, a claim that is supported by these impressive stats.
Although 2013’sRustis alive and well, many of its users have called for a sequel to finally be developed. In 2023,Facepunch’s CEO briefly mentionedRust 2, with some taking it as a confirmation that the studio is at least planning on a sequel.
