Summary
ASkyrimplayer has found their adopted child hovering over their dead pet, inferring that the younglings are capable of grim deeds.Adopting aSkyrimchildis an activity that players will often do once they’ve purchased a home, but this gamer may not have expected their kid to do something disturbing.
WhileSkyrimplayers have been able to buy houses since the game was released, adopting children was added later. BecauseSkyrimfans could marry certain NPCs when the game launched, some requested adoption, and Bethesda obliged in a DLC.Skyrim’s Hearthfire DLCadded the ability to adopt children in addition to the construction feature that allowed players to build their own houses. As they were doing some chores in theirSkyrimhome, one player was unable to intervene as their child killed a pet fox.

Reddit user CrackingChest recently shared a screenshot focusing on Sofie from theirSkyrimplaythrough. According to theSkyrimfan, they were storing weapons downstairs when they heard fighting noises which indicated that Sofie had entered combat. Upon going upstairs, CrackingChest discovered the body of their fox laying underneath a bed, with the kid standing next to it. With a blood patch in front of Sofie, it’s very likely that theSkyrimNPC killed the pet. While theSkyrimplayer was downstairs, Sofie may have taken some weapon swings before accidentally making contact with the fox.
According to CrackingChest, Sofie killed theSkyrimfox with an enchanted dagger but didn’t offer any unique dialogue about what happened. Like adoptingSkyrimkids, the option to bring wild foxes home as pets was added to the Bethesda RPG in Hearthfire. Beyond the fox, players can also bring homeSkyrimdogs, rabbits, goats, skeevers, and spiders. Each of these pets has a unique ability, with the fox being capable of finding loot when instructed to. Because this ability is tailored for the outside world, CrackingChest’s fox was likely meant to play the role of a household pet.
Though players could always kill theirSkyrimpetsif they wanted to, it’s rare for one of the adopted children to do it. When aSkyrimplayer kills their pet, it can be replaced, but the child will avoid conversation for a while.SkyrimNPCs are programmed to interact with each other and the world around them, but it’s currently unclear what caused Sofie to kill the fox.
Skyrimis available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and some legacy consoles.
