Last week, a Nintendo Direct-styled Sonic Central presentation was held in celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary. The presentation came loaded with announcements, such as a newclassicSonicgame collection inSonic Origins, upcoming Sonic cameos in a variety of SEGA games, as well as a teaser for the next mainlineSonic the Hedgehoggame. However, the most substantial reveal wasSonic Colors: Ultimate.
An HD remaster of the 2007 Nintendo Wii gameSonic Colors,Sonic Colors: Ultimatewas revealed to release later this year on September 7 on all major platforms. The remaster will include the new Jade Wisp power-up, an all-new Rival Rush mode where players can race against Metal Sonic, and more. Now, it has been revealed thatSonic Colors: Ultimateis adding a new “Tails Save” feature to the game.

This week’s issue of theJapanese video game magazine Famitsufeatures a section detailingSonic Colors: Ultimate. It has been revealed that while Tails will not be playable in the remaster, a new Tails Save feature will allow players to collect special medallions placed around the stages to then be saved by Tails after falling off of a stage, without losing any rings or lives.
In addition to keeping their lives and rings, players won’t be sent back to a previous checkpoint after being saved by Tails. Previously, fans had noticed a Tails icon in place of a Sonic icon where lives are normally counted inSonicgames, leading many to hope that Sonic’s lifelong buddy would finally be made playable in the game. Now, it seems that the Tails icon simply replaces a Sonic icon whenever players have collected one of Tails' medallions in a stage. Regardless, some fans are happy to see that instead of Sonic saving Tails, it will be Tails doing the rescuing this time around.
While fans have taken this as official deconfirmation of a playable Tails intheSonic Colorsremaster,some are still holding out hope for aSuper Mario Galaxy-style unlockable Tails after beating the game. Apart from the new Tails Save feature, the addition of new in-game styles for Sonic, player icons, new power-ups, and new game modes show that fans still have a lot to look forward to inSonic Colors: Ultimate.
Besides the upcoming remaster, fans also have a new mainlineSonic the Hedgehoggame to look forward to, which leaks and datamines point to being calledSonic Rangers. So far, all the game has attached to it is a vague trailer and a 2022 release date, but fans are sure to learn more about the game throughout the year.
Sonic Colors: Ultimatereleases September 7 on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
