The next couple of months looks to be an exciting time forSonic the Hedgehogfans, withthe upcomingSonic FrontiersThe Final Horizon DLCadding new plotlines and playable characters to last year’s mainline 3D entry andSonic Superstarscalling back to the Blue Blur’s side-scrolling roots. Details aboutSonic Superstars’ plot and gameplay have been revealed at a steady pace over the past few months, with a recent animated prologue highlighting the game’s antagonistic trio of Dr. Eggman, Fang the Hunter, andnewSonic Superstarsvillain Trip. Opposing this trinity is Sonic and his friends, who can all speed across the screen at once through local multiplayer co-op.Sonic Superstarswill also feature character customization and a PvP Battle Mode to keep things fresh after clearing the main story campaign, and Sonic Team has just shared new information about what the latter entails.

This information was revealed in a recent press statement aboutSonic Superstarsand its new Battle Mode, which can beplayed locally with four friendsor online with up to eight players. Each player controls a customizable Meta Fighter and competes to win three rounds of randomly selected battle stages to earn points. By scoring points online, players can earn medals that can be used to unlock new parts for their Meta Fighters. The variety of parts available increases as players progress through the game, but are purely cosmetic.

While offline, players can tackle these stages against AI-controlled opponents or friends through split-screen co-op without rankings or unlockable medals. The challenges inSonic Superstars’ Battle Mode include Races, in which players dash to reach the goal at the end of the course; Zap Scrap, which sees Meta Fighters shoot bullets at each other to inflict damage; Star Snatcher, a scramble to collect stars before the other players (who lose a star if they take damage); and Survival, where players try to stay on collapsing scaffolding while avoiding cannonballs.

These Battle Mode stages seem similar to the multiplayer gameplay types available inpast 3DSonicgameslikeSonic Adventure 2andSonic Heroes, and seem to be a great fit forSonic Superstars’ emphasis on having multiple players and characters racing along the game’s colorful stages at the same time. Fans won’t have to wait too much longer to face off inSonic Superstars’ new PvP Battle Mode either, as the game is set to blast off across all current platforms in mid-October.

Sonic Superstarsreleases October 17 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
