While the likes ofAssassin’s Creedand the reboot of theHitmangames are considered the go-to stealth titles in this day and age, there was a time whenSplinter Cellreigned supreme, especially in the early 2000s. A number of the franchise’s installments sit up there are assome of the most beloved stealth and espionage gamesever made. Sadly, the series has dropped off over the years, but there is hope on the horizon as it looks as though Sam Fisher may be making a return. Having said that, some people don’t appear too optimistic about it.
With very recent news thata newSplinter Cellis rumored to be in development, Ubisoft appears to be attempting to make the franchise relevant again. Many would be forgiven for thinking that this would stir up the fan base, causing untold excitement as a new installment looms ever closer to being a reality after a number of years of dormancy. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for many, who have expressed somewhat pessimistic, even indifferent, views to the announcement via Twitter.

A quick search on the social media site for anything related toSplinter Cellwill yield a number of results. Mixed in with the news, there are a number of comments on the subject, with some people outright not quite believing it. One person said that they would only believe the announcement when they “have a controller” in their hands and are actually playing it.
A couple of others have expressed their dissatisfaction that Ubisoft are handling the game, feeling that it would just incorporate thestealth mechanics of modern games likeFar Cry 6, rather than make a return to what made the oldSplinter Cellgames special. Another user said they were feeling both “happy and worried” adding that they were happy that it was a newSplinter Cellgame, but worried that Ubisoft would be at the helm. Others still seem in agreement, saying that the developer is more interested in open world and multiplayer titles, rather than stealth games with deep storylines.
The consensus suggests that even those who are pleased about the announcement are not looking to get their hopes up. Either the news is still unbelievable, or the fan base is not certain Ubisoft will be able to make a successful follow-up toBlacklist. Withthe lastSplinter Cellgame being released well over 3000 days ago, it’s a franchise that is long overdue for a return. Yet the studio is seemingly going to have to do a lot to convince people that a new game is something to be excited about.
