Little is officially known aboutStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, and what is public knowledge now was previously leaked before its actual reveal. For example, the release window stated inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s cinematic teaserconfirmed that it is currently planned to release in 2023. One of Jeff Grubb’s leaks about it suggested the same, and that fans could expect it to launch as early as February or March of next year.

Further, Grubb leaked what is nowStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s official title. On paper, the subtitle “Survivor” is obviously less memorable or unique than “Fallen Order,” and it does not seem to suggest anything out of the ordinary about protagonist Cal Kestis and his crew. However, because of how simple it is, it may also be masking several connotations that could be read into in an attempt to decipher what it truly means. Therefore, the “survivor” could refer to Cal, another Jedi, or many individuals altogether, and that makes it much more interesting to parse.

Survivor Could Refer Exclusively to Cal Kestis

IfStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s subtitle is only meant to refer to Cal, then it seems like a fairly insipid subtitle. Cal is of course a survivor of the Jedi Purge and a Padawan whose Master was killed. Cal is forced to hide among individuals who are not Force-sensitive and evade the Inquisitors, who are actively hunting any remaining Jedi.

It is then unlikely that it refers only to Cal, but he could be part of a collective of survivors who it is referring to plurally. Likewise, there could be another tragic circumstance that befalls Caland his friends, and perhaps Cal could be the sole survivor of that in the sequel. Greez Dritus, Cere Junda, and Nightsister Merrin could all suddenly perish at the hands of Inquisitors or another awful fate, and Cal would be left to earn the title of survivor once more. There are many ways “survivor” could refer to Cal that would be difficult to predict based on the sequel’s unknown events, but there are surely multiple ways Cal could be left to fend for himself again.

It was previouslyspeculated that Cal may not be the protagonist ofStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, but the game’s cinematic teaser put that theory to rest as it depicts him front-and-center. Meanwhile, Cal could potentially die at some point in the sequel, leaving players to control another character entirely.

Survivor Could Refer to Other Jedi Lost During the Purge

Obi-Wan Kenobi himself is a survivor of the Jedi Purge, and thus this subtitle could also be referring to him. Obi-Wan has already made a brief appearance inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order(in a holocron), so it would not feel completely out of place to have him appear inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, though it would need to make sense with the continuity and canon that fans understand as of now. Funny enough, it seems as though theObi-Wan Kenobiseries has taken more than a few pages out ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderfor its own narrative events, such as Obi-Wan finally using the Force again to slow someone’s otherwise fatal fall.

Of course, while “survivor” is not plural, there are likely countless Jedi like Cal that it could be referring to. Some could even argue that the sequel’s subtitle was teased inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, where a databank echo entry near the Venator Wreck on Zeffo is titled “Survivor,” and describes a clone who was killed by a lightsaber. This could either be a coincidence or a direct nod, but it still demonstrates the idea that “survivor” may be a more prolific term or a blanket statement, rather than referring to any single individual.Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderconcludes with the crew deciding that they will not seek out Force-sensitive children as it may draw too much attention to them, and thus risk their lives. “Survivor” could easily refer to any one of them, but the sequel would likely have to retcon that ending’s decision or simply go back on itif Cal and the crew do end up pursuing and rescuing Padawans.

Survivor Could Refer to Characters Believed to be Dead

Examples ofother characters who could have survived include Mace Windu, which seems far-fetched due to him being left out of canon sinceRevenge of the Sith. But with rumors that Darth Maul may appear, it would not be wholly surprising if other iconic characters from the films make a sudden reprisal. Moreover, while Padawan children and other Jedi seem like perfect candidates for the “survivor” subtitle, it is also possible that it refers simply to deceased characters fans are not expecting to return. The word “Jedi” does come before the subtitle, featured in the main title itself, but that could be referring to the protagonist Cal while the subtitle could refer to anyone.

The benefit ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderis that, while it maintainsStar Wars’ rigid canon, it also has leg-room for new events, circumstances, and characters. One such character may well bethe individual suspended in a bacta tank, whose bodily scarring and authentic hairstyle suggest he is a new character in the franchise.

Thus, the game’s subtitle may simply belong to him, as a character who may have survived his own tragic fate that players will learn about inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. Either way,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorshould continue to introduce other charactersand establish its own continuity that could potentially be taken in any direction, though it seems as if Respawn has firmly planted its narrative beats into the Jedi Purge and its aftermath.

Other iconic characters may be portrayed also, such as howDarth Vader appears inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderas an overwhelming threat. Nonetheless, any and all of these subtitle connotations have the potential to be valid inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. Significant narrative threads such as these may not be revealed until a later date, but until then, fans can continue to speculate about what exactlyStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s subtitle may refer to.
