While he was often aligned with the side of evil, that doesn’t necessarily mean that everything he does is in the best interest of someone like Palpatine. Who Is Savage Opress?
Born on the planet Dathomir, Savage Opress was a member of the powerful Nightbrother clan. He was an important figure in his homeworld, but that would all change whenthe powerful Sith assassin Asajj Ventressreturned to the planet. Before long, Savage found himself as an apprentice to both Ventress and Count Dooku for a variety of nefarious reasons. But before he ended up leaving Dathomir, he was altered by Nightsister magic to make him an even more dangerous foe to anyone he came across.
Before too long, it was revealed that Savage Opress was actually the brother of the fearedformer Sith apprentice, Darth Maul. Despite having an outwardly angry demeanor to most people, Savage Opress did genuinely seem to share some level of connection with his brother. After breaking off from Dooku and Ventress, Opress and Maul spent much of their time fighting for their own personal interests across the galaxy. It is clear that despite their darker nature, the brothers did care about one another, something that was demonstrated well after Opress would fall in battle.
Opress was far more than just some filler villain of the week. He and Darth Maul would eventually go on to take control ofthe planet Mandalore. The domination of the planet shows that Opress had unlimited potential while working under his brother Maul. Ambitious and filled with rage, the two brothers likely would have been in a good position to take over the galaxy had there not been serious interference. Getting on the wrong side of Opress was sure to spell death and ceaseless wrath for most people, though he was usually smart enough to avoid picking a fight that didn’t directly favor him.
How Strong Is Savage Opress?
While Savage Opress was not strong or skilled enough to take down some of the most powerfulStar Warscharacters, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t incredibly powerful. He never became an official member of Sidious’ Sith order, but he did become a Sith under his brother. Additionally, Savage always fought with a heavy relianceon the Dark Side of the Forcethanks to the nature of his Nightbrother heritage. He would eventually be physically transformed into a much more dominant being, but even before that, he had no issue keeping up with a warrior as skilled as Asajj Ventress.
It should be said that Savage Opress never became quite as skilled as his brother Darth Maul, which likely means he wouldn’t stand a chance in a one-on-one fightagainst someone like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite that, Savage Opress was actually trained in part by Count Dooku, one of the most skilled lightsaber duelists the galaxy had ever seen. It was this level of training that made him capable of holding his own against the Jedi Master Adi Gallia, so much so that he was able to kill her.
Over the span of his life, Savage Opress survived battles against Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku, and a handful of other Jedi. While he is skilled in lightsaber combat, it is worth acknowledging that Savage seems to be a lesser opponent compared to most when it comes to mastery of the Force. He did show some level of prowess by being able tolift and choke his foeswith relative ease, but that is about as much mastery as he ever would show over the course of his life. While many could have been capable of defeating Savage Opress, it would be one of the most powerful Sith who would put him down for good.
How Did Savage Opress Die?
After taking control of Mandalore, everything looked like it was going to keep going the way of Savage Opress andhis brother Darth Maul. The pair had been long working in the shadows of the galaxy, but now, they were able to wield great power. The only issue is that with great power, there also come great enemies waiting to seize that power. It turned out that Savage Opress ended becoming nothing more than another piece of Mandalore’s bloody history.
WithDarth Sidious always looking to be the most powerful beingaround, he was always on the lookout for people who were rising in power enough to eventually challenge him. It was the seizing of Mandolore that made both Darth Maul and Savage Opress dangerous in the eyes of plans of Darth Sidious. As manyStar Warsfans will already know, anyone who is a danger to Darth Sidious is immediately targeted for an expedient death.
If Savage and Maul played their cards right, they could have beena serious threat to the Sith, which led to Darth Sidious confronting the brothers personally. It was in this fight with Sidious that Savage Opress was bested and tossed aside to die. Savage’s death would only serve to push Maul further in his personal conquests. The loss was so significant that Savage would continue to be referenced long after his demise at the hands of the most powerful Sith Lord the galaxy had ever seen.
