A few months ago, Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, creator of the iconic indie gameStardew Valley, announced that he was now working on a new title calledHaunted Chocolatier. This new game is set to pick up whereStardew Valleyleft off while also putting its own spin on the gameplay in the form of a greater focus on combat and shop mechanics. As 2021 came to an end, ConcernedApe shared some new screenshots fromHaunted Chocolatierto give fans a glimpse at where the title is headed.
Fans of ConcernedApe’s work may already know thatHaunted Chocolatierwill feature more focus on combatthanStardew Valleydid. However, they may not know that part of the reason information aboutHaunted Chocolatieris taking a while to come out is that ConcernedApe is not reusing the combat fromStardew Valley. Instead,Haunted Chocolatier’s combat mechanics are being coded and drawn from the ground up to reflect the genre switch from simulation game to action RPG.

AlthoughHaunted Chocolatieris intended to be much more of an action gamethanStardew Valleywas, it still features some similar sights and mechanics. This is reflected in ConcernedApe’s recent Twitter post, which shows off two new screenshots focusing on different aspects of the upcoming game. The first image focuses on a large gothic-style building with ornate windows and a gargoyle over the door standing in a snow-covered landscape, while the second shows the player character standing outside an abandoned school bus that seems to have been converted into a home or garden.
Both screenshots showcase the gorgeous16-bit art style ofHaunted Chocolatier, which seems to be slightly more detailed than the art ofStardew Valley. However, the first one also highlights the remote beauty ofHaunted Chocolatier’s world. Reportedly, the game will be modeled after the moon the same way thatStardew Valleywas modeled after the sun. This surfaces in the distant, almost eerie snow-covered environment and adorably creepy gothic architecture.
ConcernedApe also used this post as an opportunity to wish his fans have a good 2022. He promised that this year would see a lot moreinformation aboutHaunted Chocolatierbeing revealed, though he did not give any specifics. As of writing, it appears that some fans are cautiously intrigued by this post. One user congratulated ConcernedApe on his hard work, while others immediately began asking questions about the world and future ofHaunted ChocolatierandStardew Valley.
