Summary
AStardew Valleyplayer has shared the odd discovery they made of an Artifact Spot appearing in their game’s inventory system. Artifact Spots are a common sight in any player’s runthrough ofStardew Valley, but players don’t usually see it like this.
As the product of a sole developer, there have beenbugs inStardew Valleythat have popped up over the years. The worst of these get patched out, but it seems that there are still some lingering oddities in the game. Thankfully, this particular discovery shouldn’t have had any significant negative impact on the playthrough, but it’s stirred up some debate among players.

Stardew Valleyplayer ObamasSirName shared a screenshot of their game with the community, along with a confused message. The image shows an Artifact Spot in aStardew Valleyplayer’s inventory, with the subtitle “How did you get this in your inventory?” Outside of the third wall-breaking flavor text, it would be easy for a new player to not know that anything was out of the ordinary with this item. However, Artifact Spots are only supposed to spawn on the ground, and can’t be picked up. Normally, a player striking it with a tool will be rewarded with a randomized item, not the actual Artifact Spot.
Other players in the comments were quick to call out ObamasSirName as having known what they did, and saying that they must have used cheats to spawn it in. However, ObamasSirName rejected these claims, noting that it was discovered in a multiplayer game and that they didn’t think there were any mods installed. Some also noted that they’ve experienced odd encounters with the Artifact Spot themselves, either finding it in their own inventories or watching streamers accidentally pick it up.
The History of Stardew Valley’s Artifact Spot
In a normal playthrough, most players will never see this particular item enter their inventories. However, this element gives players a glimpse at the way the title’s item spawns work, and has been present as a bug since the title’s launch back in 2016. In fact, the item description of theStardew ValleyArtifact Spothas changed over time, as it used to include extra text joking about the developer having made a mistake. In the past, players could accidentally dig it up by using the wrong tool on an Artifact Spot. These days, it seems to be a much rarer encounter outside of purposefully spawning it into one’s inventory through the use of mods or cheats.
Stardew Valleystill has a lot left to discover, though most of it is tied up in theStardew Valley1.6 update, not odd development quirks like this one.
