Superman and Loishas been renewed for a fourth season. This news comes alongside the renewal ofAll American: Homecomingand the cancellation of the only other DC show left on the network’s slate.
Based on characters from the pages of DC Comics,Superman and Loisfollows the titular couple as they return to Clark Kent’s childhood home of Smallville, along with their two kids, where wrongdoers and sinister plots upend their quiet, small-town living. Despite the show’s more down-to-earth premise and settings, the initial reception was strong enough thatSuperman and Loiswas renewed for a second seasonafter airing just one episode. The show continued with the second season seeing the couple’s opposition step up a notch and the third season adding some serious emotional stakes.

Expectations thatSuperman and Loiswould become the center of the Arrowverseseem to have been fulfilled, as the CW announced that the show would be renewed for a fourth season, making it the last Arrowverse show still airing. It’s also the last DC show left on the slate, asGotham Knightsfailed to be picked up for a second season. Alongside the renewal, the CW has also asked that the number of series regulars fall to accommodate the deal.
“[We are] thrilled to bringAll American: HomecomingandSuperman and Loisback to The CW," said the CW’s President of Entertainment. “These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms, with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television. We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.” The third season’s performance reflects the time and effort that went into it. Meanwhile,Gotham Knights’ debut season didn’t secure a renewal despite both shows setting release dates on their respective seasons around the same time.
With this renewal for a fourth season, we seeSuperman and Loisstand on its own laurels entirely for the first time, as the last season had the privilege of beingrenewed alongside the final season ofThe Flash, the CW’s previous DC and Arrowverse flagship. The order for the fourth season is for 10 episodes, as opposed to an expected 13, likely due to the higher production costs for a superhero series. How this will affect the layout of the next season is anyone’s guess, but the creative drivers behind the show will likely have a plan for such a limitation.
Despite being the last show standing,Superman and Loiswill not be without its hurdles moving forward. In addition to fan expectations and complaints, including the longstanding gripe with howthe show’s first season ignored Supergirland the relatively higher cost of production compared to other offerings that are less intensive in the CGI and costuming departments, it remains to be seen how the show will tackle the general audience fatigue that has now fully beset the genre.
Superman and Loisis available for streaming on the CW app and in part on HBO Max.
