That being said, there are some weapons inMordhauthat serve the player far more effectively in battle. ThebestMordhauweaponsare those that just about any average player can pick up and wield with relative efficiency. As opponents can wear different levels of armor, the best weapons inMordhaushould also do decent damage against all types of protection. In PvP, weapons also have a loadout cost, and this should be taken into consideration.

Updated June 11, 2025 by Joe Grantham:With hit medieval slasher Mordhau finally making its way to consoles, there has never been a better time to properly examine theMordhau’s best weapons. While there are certainly a few silly weapons in the game, the sheer number of deadly weapons from ranged bows and heavy-handed pole axes to nimble swords and falchions, makes ranking them no easy task.

Mordhau Estoc Sword

Every weapon has its advantages and disadvantages, especially considering they all cost varying loadout points, and certain players will excel with certain weapon types. Nevertheless, a few examples stand out as clearly thebest weapons in Mordhau.

18Estoc

The Estoc is a sword inMordhauthat is all about thrusting, rather than slashing. It has an extremely thin blade that tapers down to a terrifying point, which players should aim to stick between the vulnerable parts of the opponent’s armor. This means that proficiency with the Estoc is all about aim and patience, repeatedly hitting an armored enemy on their plate mail won’t do much.

With that in mind, it is usually a weapon best wielded by heavily armored players who can afford to take a few hits now and again. If players happen to mount a horse while wielding an Estoc, they can even couch it like a lance which makes sense given the sword’s shape and purpose.

Mordhau Falchion Sword

17Falchion

While the Falchion isn’t technically one of the best weapons inMordhauin its own right, the fact that it only costs 8 loadout points makes it incredibly cost-efficient, and it can also be used as a backup weapon in various builds.

It is a fast-hitting short ranged weapon that excels in close-quarter combat, especially ontheMordhaumapswith plenty of enclosed places such as small buildings or tight alleyways. Funnily enough, the Falchion can also be thrown, which can occasionally come in handy, especially as players will usually have another primary weapon to switch back to.

Mordhau Sledgehammer

16Sledgehammer

Despite being a peasant weapon and thus requiring the Peasant perk to be equipped, the Sledgehammer is actually an incredibly deadly weapon in the right hands. If players are accurate with their swings and manage to hit heads, they will one-shot enemies with no or light armor.

This makes the Sledgehammer ideal for the early and middle stages of Horde mode where players can chain together headshots on the waves of enemies. This can then be swapped out for an even better Maul if players wish to continue with a similar play style. The Sledgehammer also has great stamina drain, which can be useful versus heavily armored brutes. Despite its size, the Sledgehammer can also be thrown like a few other weapons inMordhau.

Mordhau Crossbow

15Crossbow

For players who would ratherkill their enemies from rangerather than get up close and personal, the Crossbow is one of the best options. In the hands of players with great aim, it will even do more headshot damage than the Longbow.

Where it falls short is in how long it takes to reload and players will actually be forced to look down at the ground during the animation. For this reason, players can role-play as a Genoese Crossbowman and take a Pavise Shield into battle with them. This can then be placed into the ground to hide behind while reloading.

14Heavy Handaxe

Seeing as it only costs 9 gear points, the Heavy Handaxe is an extremely underrated weapon inMordhau, especially against unarmored opponents. It does however have a fairly slow attack animation and gets outranged by many weapons.

One of the best things about the Heavy Handaxe is that despite primarily being a weapon, it can also function as a tool for repairing barriers. This is particularly useful in Horde mode, which is similar toZombie mode inCall of Dutygames.

Mordhau Heavy Handaxe

13Longbow

Although the Longbow has an extremely high gear cost of 33 points, leaving little to no room for armor or perks, there is nothing like feeling the power of this mighty weapon. It’s one of the best weapons inMordhauand a must-have for fans of ranged combat.

How effective this weapon is will depend on the player, as, naturally, aim is everything. With a faster reload time than the Crossbow, players do have more freedom to move around the map, and reposition after each shot.

Mordhau Longbow

12Bastard Sword

The Bastard Sword is one of the more flexible swords inMordhauas it can be wielded in either one or two hands. Unlike bigger swords, it can therefore be used alongside a trusty shield.

Although the Bastard Sword, sometimes known as a hand-and-a-half sword, doesn’t have the best damage, it does have fast swings that are hard to keep an eye on.

11Mace

The Mace is a one-handed weapon that deals blunt force damage, making it particularly effective against armored foes. However, because of its short range, players will need to close the gap on targets.

Hilariously the Mace can even be thrown using the Alt attack, and as funny as this may look, this interaction can come in useful in certain situations. It’s this kind of versatility that makes the Mace one of the best weapons inMordhau, and also one of the most fun to use.

10Pole Axe

The Pole Axe makes the cut of the best weapons inMordgauthanks to its excellent reach and versatility. Against single opponents, the Pole Axe can give the player room to kite their enemy and stay away from any weapon they may be wielding.

When facing groups, the Pole Axe turns the player into a pinwheel of death capable of sweeping and kiting with brutal efficiency. The reason it doesn’t rank higher is that there exists another weapon with equal reach and better performance; however, for those starting out, the Pole Axe is not a bad option.

9Maul

Players that main with the Maul have something of a love/hate relationship with it. If wielded properly, it can deal brutal damage and can even take down heavily armored targets with a single well-placed blow.

But to do this players need to account for slow swing speed and bad reach. Tanky builds will get the most mileage out of this weapon, but even then,it will take some practice to truly master. Rest assured, once you’re familiar with this weapon’s quirks, you’ll be a terrifying foe on the battlefield.
