Summary

The Forestis one of the more intricate survival games released in the last ten years, and it can be a little overwhelming for new players attempting to navigate both the terrifying island filled with cannibals and learn all about the crafting system that is available for making everything from bases to weapons inThe Forest.

Of all the things available to craft, weaponry and upgrades for weapons are some of the most important. No matter how players try to escape and avoid cannibals on the island, they have to get through several enemies if they want to beat the game, meaning that weapon upgrades will become a bigger priority asthe incredibly realistic survival game continues.

The Forest Poison Upgrade

6Poison Upgrade

Adds Damage Over Time

The poison upgrade is a lesser-utilized upgrade available inThe Forest. It is easily added to weapons, as are most of the upgrades in the game. However, despite adding prolonged damage to many different kinds of weapons in the game, players don’t use the poison upgrade as frequently as others. This is because the damage upgrades and fire upgrades achieve better but similar results to that of the poison upgrade. Additionally, the plants required for poison upgrades have to be found across thelarge and terrifying open-world map.

The poison damage dealt during and following a blow with a weapon for several seconds is useful, but the damage is less than that of a fire upgrade, and the poison is temporary, meaning that a normal damage upgrade, which is permanent, is a more useful addition to prioritize adding over the poison.

The Forest Flashlight Upgrade

5Flashlight Upgrade

Adds Light

Though this can be a hugely useful addition to weapons later in the game, players don’t need to prioritize adding a flashlight early on. Usually, players will start inThe Forest, attempting to survive and gather resources during the day while sleeping at night. This means they are unlikely to need a flashlight as early in the game as they could be making good use of some of the alternativeupgrades for their weaponry that can be crafted.

As the game progresses, not only are players more likely to stay up late at night, but they are also going to have to dive into the various cave systems around the island in search of better gear. In the meantime, players are likely going to need to prioritize other weapon upgrades to survive the early sections of the game and fight off the cannibals and mutants they’ll face before those deeper cave systems.

The Forest Damage Upgrade

4Damage Upgrade

Adds Damage

A simple but useful upgrade, the damage upgrade only requires players to add teeth to their weapon, sticking them on with sap, and increasing the amount of damage done with a swing of the weapon in the process. Unfortunately, players won’t start finding and being able to gather teeth until they’ve already encountered and killed many enemies, so this is another weapon upgrade that is difficult to enact immediately.

Damage upgrades are useful and permanent, but the major drawback is a slight decrease in the speed of the weapon in favor of this increased damage output. It is still worth doing, particularly for smaller weapons that already have plenty of speed but are lacking in damage. Any permanent weapon upgrades are a huge advantage to players, and these are the ones that should generally be prioritized early in the game, with some of the best weapons.

The Forest Fire Upgrade

3Fire Upgrade

Adds Light & Fire Damage

Another temporary upgrade, but one that can be hugely helpful and easy to add early in the game, and frequently, setting a weapon on fire inThe Forestis easy for players. Only requiring cloth and one of the available weapons that can be lit, the fire upgrade adds a huge volume of extra damage, setting targets on fire and burning them for huge additional damage, even once the player has backed away from the target.

This extended damage, as well as the light provided by lit weaponry, makes the fire weapon upgrade a must for early cave exploration. Players will be able to see better and drive enemies into a panic, which is hugely necessary at close quarters. Furthermore, cloth is readily available throughout the game, so players should never run out, andthey can use plenty of fire in traps as well.

The Forest Damage Plus Upgrade

2Damage+ Upgrade

Adds Huge Damage

The damage+ weapon upgrade inThe Forestis a huge buff to weapon damage, adding broken shards of glass to a player’s weapon as opposed to the simple teeth of the regular damage upgrade. Even better, this upgrade doesn’t only add more damage, but it can be obtained easier than the damage upgrade, and earlier, since players begin on the plane and will be able to find bottles of booze right there, and should start storing them up early.

This upgrade is a must for early-game weaponry, as many of the items players will be able to find or craft early in the game will have reasonable speed, but will be lacking in damage. Players can get a huge jump on their early enemies by adding these shards of glass to any of their weapons they can, and this upgrade is another permanent one to boot.

The Forest Speed Upgrade

1Speed Upgrade

Adds Speed

The most useful upgrade inThe Forestis speed because the game is all about speed. Early in the game, players will want to have speed in running from certain enemies, and as the game continues, they’ll need speed on their weapons over sheer damage, as some enemies will be unbelievably fast, and no level of damage on its own will be capable of combating them.

Players need to be able to dive in and out with their weapons. Adding simple feathers, which can be found easily and often, gives a weapon a permanent boost in speed. This addition allows players the opportunity to strike first before enemies have a chance to attack them, and thenback away to their base if required.
