When players last left off inThe Last of Us Part 1, Joel’s life seemed to be dangling on a thread. Now it’s winter, and Ellie has to face the apocalyptic landscape on her own. Things may start off simple enough, but quickly take a dark turn as “Lakeside Resort” quickly becomesthe game’s most grisly and harrowing chapter yet.

WhileThe Last of Us Part 1can sometimes get dark, most players would agree that it never gets any darker than in this chapter. As the only time in the game where a season takes up only a single chapter, “Lakeside Resort” is a sprawling segment of the story, frequently swapping perspectives as our dynamic duo gets separated in quite possibly the most disturbing location in the Cordyceps apocalypse.
The Hunt
Players will immediately take control of Ellie as soon as the cutscene ends. Ellie will be tasked with chasing down and killing a deer, which can be trickier than it sounds. Crouch and move forward; the deer should be in the path directly ahead of Ellie.Stay far away and use Ellie’s bowto take down the deer; if the deer gets any indication of Ellie’s presence, it will run away.
After the deer’s been shot once, it will run away. Tracking will be easier, as now it’s left a trail of blood. Follow it, then shoot it a second time. It will still be alive and run off. Continue following it.
The deer will lead Ellie over a fence and out of the woods. Eventually, Ellie will find herself in a small abandoned building just outside a coal mine. Go inside the building, then turn into the small room on the left to find acomicinside a drawer.
Afterward, continue following the deer on the other side of the building to trigger the next cutscene.
After the cutscene, Ellie will be teamed up with David for a little while. There will be a short amount of time before infected show up; use this time to search the room for extra supplies.
Soon, infected will start breaking in through the windows.Stick to the back of the room to gun each of them down. The rifle will kill each infected with a single shot regardless of aiming, so it’s best to stick to it during combat. Some infected will also drop extra ammo.
Midway through combat, David will go to the left side of the room and push the shelf to help block off the window. Go to the back of the shelf andpress the triangle buttonto help David push the shelf. Then get ready for more combat.
Eventually, David will kick open the door to leave the room. Follow him through the next area. In the next room, follow David up the stairs and onto the walkway above. The walkway will break, causing Ellie to fall back to the ground floor.
More clickers will show up, but they’ll be unaware of Ellie. There will be three clickers in this first area; two will be wandering around, while the third will be standing still.
Ellie can kill clickers with her switchblade, which is unbreakable. So, unlike with Joel, there’s no need to worry about crafting shivs throughout most of this chapter. Therefore, if possible,it’s best to kill clickers with Ellie’s switchbladein order to avoid using resources.
After dealing with these clickers, move to the far-right corner of the area (guarded by the clicker standing still) and drop down to the next area.
Another clicker will be wandering around down here. Kill it, then move to the other end to find a ladder. Climb it to return to the ground floor with David
Follow David until the two come to a small open area. David will point out possibly using a ladder to climb up. Turn around to find a small open area next to the wall that leads to the walkway. Walk up to it andpress the triangle buttonto have David boost Ellie up.
On the walkway, go to the other side of the room. A clicker will come out of a nearby room and go towards Ellie; kill it, then go inside the room it came fromto find afirefly pendant. Turn around and continue forward.
Continue forward and turn right to find the ladder.Press the triangle buttonto drop the ladder down to David, then jump down. David will place the ladder against the wall and climb up. Climb up and continue following him.
Continue forward into the next room. Walk up the steps to find a few bodies,where Ellie can have anoptional conversationwith Davidabout them.
In a short while, there’ll be another combat section, so use this time to prepare Ellie and search the room for supplies. Be sure to craft Molotov cocktails; Ellie will need them shortly. Infected will begin coming through the hallway and through the windows on the upper floor. Use Ellie’s rifle to kill them with one shot. Infected will also occasionally drop ammo.
Eventually, a bloater will drop down in the center of the room. Regular infected will still attack, however.Focus on taking down the bloaterwhenever possible, preferably using Molotov cocktails to kill it.
After all the infected have been killed, follow David into the adjacent hallway. He’ll look out the window. Walk up to him to trigger the next cutscene.
Cabin Resort
After the cutscene, Ellie will need to escape the neighborhood on horseback. As she begins riding, David’s men will shoot at her and run up to Callus. Try to avoid David’s men whenever possible. If one of David’s men grabs onto Callus,press the square buttonrepeatedlyto push them off.
Callus will be shot and killed, causing Ellie to fall down to a resort area. Walk up into the house and look around for supplies. A few of David’s men will come towards the house. If possible, leave the house before David’s men can get to it. If not, hide behind the kitchen counter and take them out.
Outside, head through the right side of the area, as there will be plenty of cabins and other structures to hide in. Take out David’s men; Ellie will need to get rid of all of them in order to proceed to the next area.
In a gazebo to the right of the first cabin will be afirefly pendant.
On the other side of the area will be some stone steps leading up to a walkway above. It’ll be guarded by two of David’s men, so kill them first, then walk up.
Walk up the stone steps and across the walkway leading to a cliffside. Keep moving forward, eventually dropping into another small area. Just ahead will be a small pipe. Crouch down and crawl through.
On the other side, turn around and walk up the steps to find acomic bookon a nearby bench.
Go back down; ahead, there’ll be another pipe. Before crawling through, go to the left side of the pipe. A dumpster will be sticking into the pipe.Press the triangle buttonto pull it out; now, the pathway inside the pipe will be clear. Crouch down and crawl through the pipe.
On the other side, drop down to the next area. David’s men will be searching, so stay hidden and kill them before continuing forward.
Once all the enemies are dead, move over to the opposite end of the lodge from where Ellie initially emerged. Go behind the building to find a green dumpster.Press the triangle buttonto move the dumpster. Behind it will be an opening leading inside the lodge. Alternatively, to the right will be an opening a few feet above; Ellie can move the dumpster here and climb onto it and into the lodge through the opening.
Search the rooms for supplies, then move forward into the main area. Two of David’s men will be guarding the windows ahead, so Ellie is bound to be spotted. Shoot them; once they’re dead, a few more men will enter the lodge from the main entrance. Kill them, then move towards the exit.Press the triangle buttonto open the door andpress the square button repeatedlyto push it open, triggering the next cutscene.
Playing as Joel once more, search through the house for supplies. Joel can either exit the house through the garage or the front door. Either way, exit the house and walk down the street.
Eventually, some of David’s men will burst through a fence ahead, immediately spotting Joel. Hide behind the nearby car, using it for cover to take out David’s men.
When they’re taken care of, move up through the gate David’s men initially came out from. More men will be waiting in the neighboring backyard ahead. Take cover behind the fence and kill David’s men. When possible, move into the backyard, as there will be more cover options in there as well.
The last two men will run off. When combat is over, search the house for supplies. Then go back outside and walk to the left side of the house and down. Jump over the small fence leading to the street.
Joel will immediately get jumped by the two remaining men.Press the square button repeatedlyto hold them off, triggering the next cutscene.
After the cutscene, players will take control of Ellie again. Run through the alley. Ellie will get to two separate buildings, one straight ahead and one on the right. Enter the door on the right.
Straight ahead will be a cart; walk up to it andpress the triangle buttonto move it out of the way. Crouch down and crawl through the opening. David’s men will begin searching the shops, so stay crouched down and use the shelves for cover.
Ellie will be extremely limited on supplies and ammo during this section. Kill one of David’s men to get arevolver; most other enemies will drop ammo. Most areas will be littered withbricks or bottles, so use them to help distract enemies. Ellie’s stealth kills are louder and longer than Joel’s, so use them with caution.
Jump out the window to the left and move into the next store. Go through the store and onto the street. Cross the street and head towards the two barrels on fire.
Walk ahead and up onto the walkway. Hide inside the small building as more of David’s men will come searching.
Exit the building and move ahead across the walkway. Another one of David’s men will be searching. As he’s isolated, it will be easier to take him out.
Keep moving straight ahead. Enter the first alley on Ellie’s left, then enter the building on the right. Two men will immediately enter; use a brick or bottle to distract them and take them out.
Go outside onto the street. The blizzard will make it difficult for Ellie to see where she’s going, but it will also make it more difficult for enemies to see her as well. Cross the street and use the buildings as cover. Continue forward and head down the first alley on Ellie’s left, then continue forward.
Ellie will come to a dead end with a fence. On the left will be a dumpster Ellie can climb to head inside a restaurant. Head to the front entrance of the restaurant andpress the triangle buttonto open the door.
The fight with David can be difficult; the trick is to attempt to sneak up on him from behind. Stay crouched down and move through the restaurant, using the tables, seats, and counters as cover.

Broken plates and glass will be scattered throughout the restaurant; if Ellie steps on them, David will hear where she is. Continue moving through the restaurant. When David has her back to Ellie, move up to him andpress the triangle buttonto attack him.
After attacking him twice, David will initially chase after Ellie. Run and hide; eventually, David will also hide behind cover. Look around the restaurant to see his head poke out from his hiding spot. Then sneak over there and attack him.
Picking up as Joel, go through the motel on the left side of the street; on the other side will be a shed requiring a shiv to open it. Inside will be atraining manual.
Then move across the street into the gas station on the right. Collect the supplies, then wait behind cover. More of David’s men will search the area, so kill them and proceed forward.
Ahead on the right, one of David’s men will be waiting on top of a truck, with another man to the right. Use Joel’s bow-and-arrow to kill them silently, then climb into and through the truck.
Stay crouched and hide behind cover in this next area. A few more of David’s men will come searching. Kill them, then cross the street and into the alley. Follow the linear path until Joel comes across an open door. Enter for Joel to find Ellie’s backpack.
In this room to the right will be anotherartifact. Walk through the building andpress the triangle buttonto open the front door.
In this final section, David’s knife will be under a nearby table. When the game is focused on both Ellie and the knife, move forward to get to the knife.
David will climb on top of Ellie.Press the triangle buttonto grab the knife, finally killing David.
