What is Welcome to Wrexham About?
Back in September 2020, actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds announcedtheir intention to purchase Wrexham A.F.C– a decision which baffled both the UK’s press and Wrexham fans. Everybody had the same question, why would two mainstream American actors want to buy a Welsh football club? By September 2021, the deal was complete and McElhenney and Reynolds officially became the club’s new owners.
Wrexham is one of the most beloved football teams in Wales, and it is fueled by passionate fans. However, in 2021, the team were evidently struggling, largely due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Founded in 1864, it goes without saying that there’s a lot of history attached to Wrexham A.F.C. Back in 2008, the team were relegated from League Two, which resulted in many fans becoming demoralized. Up until 2021, the team were struggling to move up in the National League and had started to lose hope of a promotion, especially due to their financial setbacks.

When they became Wrexham’s new owners, neither McElhenney nor Reynolds had any experience managing a football team, so Wrexham fans were understandably anxious about the future of their beloved team. Following McElhenney and Reynolds’ £2 million investment, Wrexham started to move up in the National League. Although fans were initially skeptical of McElhenney and Reynolds’ involvement, it soon became clear thatWrexham was finally in safe hands.Welcome to Wrexhammakes it evident that both McElhenney and Reynolds share the fans’ passion for the team. When Wrexham were promoted back in April of this year, the pair were spotted crying tears of joy following the team’s win, which brought Wrexham back into the EFL for the first time in fifteen years.
Welcome to Wrexham’sdramatic first seasondocumented Wrexham’s journey as the team ascended the National League’s rankings. The series provided audiences with the opportunity to get to know Wrexham’s team of talented players and offered an explanation behind the UK’s famed obsession with football, making it a must watch for any sports fan. Since season one ofWelcome to Wrexhamaired back in 2022, Wrexham A.F.C suddenly have global attention and have certainly accumulated an onslaught of new fans.

Since news of the team’s promotion was announced earlier this year, fans have beeneagerly awaitingWelcome to Wrexham’ssecond season, which documents the team’s progress in the EFL League Two division. So far, the second season has been just as educational and emotional as its acclaimed first season and is certainly living up to fans’ expectations. However, episode seven’s bizarre editing blunder has certainly rattled many of the show’s UK viewers.
What Was the Show’s Recent Editing Mishap?
Episode 7 ofWelcome to Wrexham’ssecond season included a map of England and Wales which intended to show where some British football teams are located. The map featured images of the teams’ logos, but viewers quickly called out the map’s bizarre appearance. In an exceptional editing mishap, the map was geographically incorrect and appeared to have scattered the football teams randomly across the UK. For example, Brentford, the London-based team, appears just below the Scottish border, and Everton, which is based in Liverpool, can be seen on the West coast of Wales. The errors are countless, but one of the most prominent mishaps is the map’s placement of fellow Welsh teams, Swansea and Cardiff. Rather than appearing in their home country, the Welsh teams have randomly been placed in Devon, which is South-West of England.
Since the bizarre map was unveiled in episode 7, UK viewers haven’t been able to stop poking fun at it. Fans have taken to social media to comment on the map’s hilarity, with some viewers dubbing it as one of the worst things they’ve ever seen. Based on its countless errors, other viewers are certain that the map was included in the series as a joke. An image of the map was posted byTerrible Maps onX, accompanied by the humorous caption: “The ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary is clearly a fan of Terrible Maps”. The account then proceeded to tag both Reynolds and McElhenney, clearly looking for some explanation for the map, but both actors have been radio silent about this blunder.
UK viewers certainly have a lot of questions surrounding the map, mainly consisting of ‘Why didn’t the creators of the map actually look at a map of the UK?’ and ‘How did this get approved?’. At the time of writing, Welcome to Wrexham’s creators haven’t commented on this humorous blunder, and it is still featured near the beginning of episode seven. Some UK viewers are taking the map as an affront, believing that it presents a stereotypical ‘Americanised’ view of football – something which both Reynolds and McElhenney were likely looking to avoid whenthey bought the Welsh club back in 2021. However, the map isn’t the only editing mishap featured inWelcome to Wrexham’sseventh episode.
The episode also featured an old photograph of Welsh laborers, but some viewers are claiming that something seems ‘off’ about the photograph. Fans are questioning the legitimacy of the photograph after spotting a floating jug in the image. Viewers have also noticed that one man’s face appears to be blurred and distorted, whilst others are critiquing the image for its inclusion of historically inaccurate details.
Due to the photograph’s strange features, some viewers areclaiming that the image is AI generated. Because of this,Welcome to Wrexhamis being met with an onslaught of criticism from viewers who disagree with the use of AI in the creative industry, especially when it is being used to forge historical photographs. Back in June, it was confirmed that Marvel had usedAI to createSecret Invasion’sopening credits. Viewers were understandably outraged by this revelation, with some Marvel fans claiming that this was a blatant affront to those working in the creative industry.
At the time of writing, it is mere speculation whetherWelcome to Wrexhamused AI to create the photograph. However, if proven that the creators did use AI, then this could also offer an explanation to the inaccurate map.Welcome to Wrexham’screators have not commented on the photograph, and it’s unlikely that they will, but viewers are certainly hoping for less editing blunders during the remainder of season two.
