A few things happened in Activision’s recent earnings call that has fueled speculation that the 2020Call of Dutycould very well be a remaster or remake instead of a full-fledged new game. And if it is, the general consensus seems to be that it will be a remake or remaster of the 2010 hitCall of Duty: Black Ops.
In Activision’s earnings call, the company did not reveal theCall of Duty2020 developer. Reports from trusted sources have claimed that development on the game had not been going well, with Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software coming into conflict. It was reported that Treyarch was then brought on board to salvage the project, despite having just releasedCall of Duty: Black Ops 4in 2018.

Combine Activision’s reluctance to reveal the game’s developer with its decision todownplayCall of Duty2020’s sales potentialand its promise to release more remasters and remakes this year, and it’s easy to see why some think this year’s game will be aBlack Opsremaster. This would be the safe option, as it would theoretically be easier to produce a remake or remaster as opposed to building an entirely new game from the ground up, and Treyarch did not have as much time to work on 2020’sCall of Duty.
There’s not a lot we know aboutCall of Duty2020 at the time of this writing, though, so it’s still quite possible that this year’s game will be a brand new title. Previous rumors have pointed to a Cold War setting and the game havingBlack Ops 5as the title, though that remains to be seen.
Whatever the case may be,Call of Dutygamesare usually revealed in May or June each year, so it should be a few more months before fans get a better look at the game. Due to its more restricted development compared to other recentCall of Dutygames, though, it’s possible that it may be a bit longer before Activision decides to show off the new game.
One thing that seems likely with the newCall of Dutygame is that it will have aBattle Pass instead of loot boxes or a season pass. Reports indicate thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfarehas made significantly more money than games with season passes and loot boxes, so it’s a safe bet that will be Activision’s plan moving forward.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
