The Astronauts, an independent Polish video game development company, have recently released a new gameplay trailer for its highly anticipated dark fantasy first-person shooter game,Witchfire. For those who are not familiar with the company’s background, it was founded in October 2012 by Adrian Chmielarz, Michał Kosieradzki, and Andrzej Poznański, who had previously established People Can Fly in 2002. The Astronauts gained recognition with therelease ofThe Vanishing of Ethan Carter, a horror adventure game, in 2014.

Witchfirewas first introduced by The Astronauts in 2017, but after its reveal, the game remained in the dark for quite some time. After a five-year-long wait, the game resurfaced with the news that it was set to release in 2022. However,The Astronauts' ambitions forWitchfirecontinued to grow, leading them to delay the game’s release until 2023 to improve its exploration elements.

The newtrailer forWitchfirewas unveiled during IGN Fan Fest 2023, showcasing the game’s unique gun mechanics. In the trailer, Creative Director Adrian Chmielarz delved into the intricacies of the game’s weaponry, specifically focusing on a powerful hand cannon known as Hunger. This formidable firearm rewards player for landing critical hits by granting them extra powerful bullets upon reloading.

However, Hunger’s capabilities don’t stop there. As players progress through the gun’s Attunements, they can increase the power of their bullets even further by consistently landing critical hits. At the final level of Attunement, Hunger becomes even deadlier as the first body shot counts as a critical hit, allowing players to freeze their enemies if they manage to land all critical shots. These unique and customizable gun mechanics promise to add an exciting level of depth and strategy to the game.

This is the second trailer released forWitchfirethis year, with the first coming out in early January. The previous trailer showcased the game’s ability to maintain a high frame rate despite its intensive graphics, thanks to the implementation of DLSS 3 technology by the developers. Additionally, the first trailer provided aglimpse ofWitchfire’s intense first-person shooter gameplay, where the player character employs a combination of magic spells and guns to eliminate various monstrous foes.

AlthoughWitchfireis categorized as a rogue-lite game, its gameplay trailers have drawn comparisons to well-establishedfirst-person shooter gamessuch asBioShock,Dishonored, andDoom.
